Records Fall as Field Hockey Opens with Win

Bo van Kempen rewrote the program record books with a six-goal outburst, adding an assist for a 13-point day, another program record. Van Kempen's six goals are the most by a player in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) since at least 2017 and just one shy of the NCAA record. Her 13 points surpassed Kelsey Millman's 10 against Georgetown in 2011 while van Kempen's six goals bested the previous mark of four, accomplished seven times prior to Friday's game.
Pati Strunk added six assists, setting another program record for a single game, aiding in the 15 total goals for Syracuse. The Orange program record for single-game goals is 16, set on Oct. 10, 2008 in a 16-0 win over BIG EAST rival Georgetown.
How it Happened
- Syracuse scored quickly as van Kempen capitalized on a penalty corner just 20 seconds into the season as Strunk sent the ball into Liz Stange. Despite the final outcome, it would be the only goal for either side for the balance of the first quarter.
- The Orange piled up seven goals in the second quarter, all coming from the stick of either van Kempen or Hattie Madden. The former scored four times in the second quarter, all on penalty corners, while the latter tallied her first career hat trick. Van Kempen converted a penalty stroke earned by Syracuse freshman Henni Nation.
- In the second half, Syracuse continued to find the back of the net as Danique Schuurman, van Kempen and Karsin Beatty scored in succession in a six-minute span.
- Depth scoring came into play for the Orange in the fourth quarter as rookies Ally Snyder and Aubrey Turner found the mark. Turner scored twice in her first collegiate game.
- Schuurman capped the game with a final goal in the 56th minute to seal the program's second-biggest winning differential.
- Van Kempen scored her first hat trick for the Orange with her six goals. Her assist came on Beatty's goal as van Kempen flicked in the penalty corner tipped in by Beatty.
- Hattie Madden also logged a hat trick for the first time as well. In a unique moment, her twin sister Bo Madden assisted with a long-range transition pass up to Hattie for a 7-0 Syracuse lead midway through the second.
- Schuurman and Turner added two goals apiece in the second half. Strunk was a machine on the insert as she picked up her six assists for a program record day. Stange added three helpers with traps on the penalty corner unit as well.
- The Orange split time in goal as Jesse Eiselin played the first and third periods while Tane King played the second and fourth. King was in net as Lock Haven uncorked its only shot of the game and stood tall on the Bald Eagles lone corner attempt as well.
- The Orange return to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday for a clash against reigning Northeast Conference champion Fairfield University.
- First push back is slated for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
