Graduate student Ashley Rauch scored two goals for the second time in four contests and Syracuse (3-1-0) won at Holy Cross (0-3-1), 3-1, on Sunday in Worcester, Mass.
The victory was the second straight for the Orange, who defeated Canisius on Thursday, 4-0.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED:
Rauch helped secure the win with her penalty-kick tally at the 76:38 mark. Senior Mia Klammer set things up with a long carry down the right side of the field. Klammer's change of pace gave her an edge and forced the Holy Cross defender to foul her in the box. Rauch converted her second penalty kick of the season to put Syracuse ahead, 3-1.
KLAMMER FINDS McDERMOTT:
After the first 28 minutes were mostly contested in the middle of the field, the Orange grabbed the lead. Klammer possessed on the right and, after drawing another defender, fed the ball to a wide open Maya McDermott in front of the Crusader net. Holy Cross goalkeeper Antriana Mila dove one way and McDermott used her left foot to send the ball into the net.
McDermott, who earned her first collegiate goal against Canisius, scored for the second consecutive match.
RAUCH CONNECTS:
Less than six minutes after McDermott's tally, the Orange extended their margin. Rauch found open field in the middle of the pitch and drove toward the box. When the Crusader defense closed, she drove the ball left-footed into an open corner of the goal. Syracuse maintained a 2-0 advantage into the break.
VANDERBOSCHÂ COMES UP BIG:
Senior Shea Vanderbosch was credited with one save and it was a show stopper. The play began with a corner kick from Holy Cross, a set piece that Orange defender Natalie Magnotta headed away from the goal. The ball ended up on the foot of Cara Bubonovich and her drive snuck its way through traffic. Despite being screened, Vanderbosch reacted in time to keep the hosts from scoring.
CRUSADERS RALLY:
Holy Cross narrowed the Syracuse margin to one goal when Riley Grable scored at the 58:36 mark. Grable's free kick from 35 yards away bounced away from Vanderbosch and into the Orange net. Syracuse limited Holy Cross to one shot over the final 20 minutes to seal the triumph.
