Senior Mia Klammer scored with less than 13 minutes remaining and Syracuse held on the rest of the way to earn a hard-fought, 1-0 triumph at Miami on Saturday night in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Orange improved to (5-6-4, 1-5-1 ACC) with the victory, while the Hurricanes (6-6-2, 0-5-1) picked up the defeat.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
A quick strike in transition created the game's only tally. Graduate student Ashley Rauch secured the ball in the middle of the field and went on the attack. Rauch carried at a slight angle to the left before crossing a perfect lead to Klammer on the right side. Klammer engaged Miami goalkeeper Atlee Olofson and beat her with a diagonal drive to the lower left corner.
A 'CUSE CLEAN SHEET
Syracuse defense pressured Miami throughout and limited the Hurricane's quality chances. Although Miami had 16 shots, only one was on goal, and senior Shea Vanderbosch made easy work of that. The biggest test for the Orange defense came on set pieces, with Miami earning 11 corners in the second half.
CROYLEÂ EARNS EARLY CHANCES
Sophomore Anna Croyle, who started for the 33rd straight match, played a part in three early opportunities for Syracuse. The first two came off corner kicks. Croyle managed to get her head on two corners off the foot of sophomore Gabby Wisbeck, at 7:18 and again at 11:22 into the match, but both sailed just wide of the Hurricane net.
Croyle used her foot the next time she earned a look. Junior Vita Naihin carried in Miami territory and fed Rauch just inside the box. Rauch dropped a pass back to Croyle, whose long strike forced Miami's Emily Bredek to leap and deflect the ball off-line and over the goal.
Rauch added a threatening shot in the final two minutes of the first half. She crossed over at the edge of the box and sent a left-footed drive that caused Bredek to extend to her right for the save.Â
MOMENTUM SHIFT LEADS TO WINNER
Miami upped its offensive play in the second half and forced the Orange to maintain its defensive level. Syracuse counterattacked in the 72nd minute when Klammer's hustle got the ball to senior Anna Rupert, whose try was on target. A minute and a half later, senior Maya McDermott slip a pass to junior Julia Coval, and her long shot forced an Olofson save. Syracuse's tally came a little more than three minutes later.
