9/20/2025 9:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer
#1 Virginia (8-0-1, 0-2-1) got goals from three different players and defeated host Syracuse (4-3-4, 0-2-1), 3-0, in front of a season-high crowd of 1,244 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch made 10 saves on the evening and moved into second place on the school's career stop list (337).
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
The game was knotted at zero for most of the first half until the top-ranked Cavaliers put together the scoring play the ultimately clinched the victory. Caffie Helfrich started the sequence in the midfield, leading Allie Ross, who then found Lia Godfrey. Godfrey's hard shot from Vanderbosch's right found the net and gave Godfrey five goals on the year. It put Virginia ahead, 1-0, with 8:45 remaining in the opening half.
SYRACUSE'S BEST OPPORTUNITY
The Orange had the first good chance in the contest. Jasmine Nixon cleared the defensive end and Mia Klammer tracked the ball at midfield. Klammer continued the Syracuse transition into Virginia territory before sliding a pass left to Ashley Rauch. Rauch drove the ball toward the lower right-hand corner but Virginia's Victoria Safradin dove and knocked the attempt away.
THE CAVS CREATE A CUSHION
The two teams played even on the board for the first 28 minutes of the second half. Vanderbosch played a large role with four saves during that span.
Virginia broke through at the 73:39 mark. After Syracuse defenders blocked back-to-back shots from Ross, Godfrey corralled the loose ball and fed Ella Carter, who tallied her third goal of the campaign. It put the Cavaliers in front, 2-0. Maggie Cagle closed out the evening with a penalty-kick goal at 83:14.
VANDERBOSCH CLOSES IN ON SCHOOL RECORD
Vanderbosch, who equaled her season-best total with 10 saves, advanced into the second spot on Syracuse's career save list. She moved by Eliza Bennett-Hattan, who had 331 stops in 60 matches from 2006-09. Vanderbosch, who was playing in her 60th contest, now has 337 saves. Courtney Brosnan owns the Syracuse record with 344 stops (2014-17) in 67 games.
