Senior Mia Klammer and graduate student Ashley Rauch had big offensive games in their final outings but #23 North Carolina (11-6-0, 5-4-0) outscored Syracuse (5-9-4, 1-8-1) on Sunday at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. It was the final match of the season for the Orange.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
North Carolina's Olivia Thomas scored twice in the first 21 minutes of play and the Tar Heels never trailed in the contest. Thomas tallied her 12th of the season after creating a break and connecting with her left foot at 15:18 of the first half. Five minutes later, Thomas took a pass from Hope Munson and found the lower right-hand corner from in close to increase North Carolina's margin to 2-0.
ORANGE GET BACK IN THE GAME
Syracuse showed some grit after falling behind early. Following an Orange corner kick, a scramble ensued. Graduate student Ashley Rauch pounced on the ball and directed it toward the Carolina goal. It went off Syracuse junior Vita Naihin and past Carolina goalkeeper Hannah Johann to close the gap to 2-1 at 26:41. It was Vita Naihin's second goal of the campaign.
A DOUBLE RESPONSE FROM UNC
North Carolina found the net twice in a three-minute span to push the lead back up to two, 4-2. Munson earned her second assist by feeding Linda Ullmark at 35:01. Three minutes after Ullmark's sixth goal, Kate Fraase scored her ninth of the fall on a header that went in off the cross bar. Bella Devey picked up the assist. The hosts went into the intermission with a 4-1 advantage.
KLAMMER TIME
The Orange scored the only goal of the second half. Rauch served a ball up into the box and in typical fashion, Mia Klammer out-dueled Carolina keeper Liya Brooks and pushed the ball into the net, a bit more than 10 minutes into the second half. It was Klammer's squad-leading, eighth goal of the season. The 4-2 score held up the rest of the way.
