Syracuse Rally Falls Short In 2-1 Loss

Syracuse's (1-1-0) furious second-half rally fell short and Niagara (1-0-0) emerged with a 2-1 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Orange out-shot the Purple Eagles, 29-5, including 15-0 in the second half but two first-half tallies from Niagara held up in the end.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED:
Niagara struck twice in the first 17 minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Lucas scored off a headed pass from junior forward Izzy Schmidt 10:51 into the contest to put the Purple Eagles ahead. Six minutes later, sophomore midfielder Mahelie Barbeau secured a rebound from a free kick and found the net to put Niagara ahead, 2-0. The Purple Eagles never trailed in the contest.
KLAMMER EMERGES FOR ORANGE
Senior forward Mia Klammer was a dominant offensive force for Syracuse. She keyed the Orange rally by scoring with 7:10 left in regulation to pull Syracuse within one, 2-1. Senior Anna Rupert assisted on the goal, Klammer's second of the season.
Klammer, who missed last season with an injury after transferring from the College of St. Rose, finished with a game-high six shots evenly split between the two halves. She logged the full 90 minutes.
CORNER ATTACK:
Syracuse's offensive wave was bolstered by a 15-2 advantage in corner kicks. Twelve of the corners came after the intermission. Freshman defender Bree Bridges had five shots in the contest, most of which were headers off set pieces.
NOTABLE NOTES:
Syracuse hosts Canisius on Thursday, August 21, at 3 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.

- Syracuse graduate student Ashley Rauch, and freshmen Julia Arbelaez and Abby Incorvaia each recorded three shots.
- In addition to Klammer, Syracuse received 90-minute performances from graduate students Rauch and Shea Vanderbosch, sophomore Anna Croyle and freshman Jasmine Nixon.
- Vanderbosch finished with two saves in goal for the Orange.
