Orange Start With 5-0 Shutout

Graduate student Ashley Rauch scored twice within 40 seconds and Syracuse erupted for five first-half goals in a 5-0 triumph against Charleston Southern on Friday at the SU Soccer Stadium. It was the season opener for both squads.
Rauch was joined by sophomore Anna Croyle, senior Mia Klammer and freshman Olivia Bozzo in the goal parade. Rauch added an assist and freshman Julia Arbelaez had two assists in her collegiate debut.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED:
With Syracuse leading, 1-0, Rauch produced her two tallies. The first, with 30:51 left in the opening period, came after Rauch picked off a pass from Charleston Southern goalkeeper Avery Mason and directed it into the open net. Just 40 seconds later, Klammer was fouled in the box. Rauch took the penalty kick and picked an open corner to move the Orange in front, 3-0.
OPENING SHOTS:
The Orange got on the board less than 10 minutes into the contest. Rauch served a ball toward the Buccaneer net and Croyle headed it past Mason. It was Croyle's first goal at Syracuse and came 8:54 after the game began.
ARBELAEZ DISHES TWICE:
Syracuse added two goals in the final 20 minutes of the first half and Arbelaez was involved in both. An Arbelaez cross found Klammer unguarded at the goal mouth and the senior deflected the ball in for her first Syracuse tally 25:58 into the period. Klammer was playing in her first official game with the Orange after missing last season with an injury. Close to 11 minutes later, Arbelaez's corner kick reached freshman Olivia Bozzo, who finished with her initial collegiate goal.
NOTABLE NOTES:
The Orange host Niagara on Sunday, August 15, at 6 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
