'Cuse Sweeps Niagara in Home Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team (19-8, 1-5 ACC) swept Niagara (2-10) in the home-opening doubleheader Wednesday night at the Syracuse Softball Stadium at Skytop. The Orange took the first game 7-6 on the final play thanks to a walk-off single from Tessa Galipeau, before finding their form in the second matchup for a 15-0 victory. The Orange's 15-0 win is the largest margin of victory this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
Niagara opened scoring in the top of the third inning, using a three-run home run over the center-field wall to give the Purple Eagles an early lead. The Orange responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning thanks to two RBI singles by Angie Ramos and Taylor Posner.
Niagara took a 6-3 advantage in the fifth inning, holding the lead until the final frame.
Syracuse got their first three batters in the bottom of the seventh on base, before a 2 RBI double to right field from Kayla Sigala. Galipeau knocked in two more to secure the 7-6 win for the Orange.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
Syracuse took the reins in the second inning, as Galipeau hit an RBI double and three different Orange players hit RBI singles to take an early 5-0 lead.
The Orange continued to run offensively, scoring three more in the third inning and seven runs in the fourth inning to take a decisive 15-0 victory in five innings.
OF NOTE:
- The pair of wins moves 'Cuse to 23-2 in the all-time series against the Purple Eagles, winning the last eight straight games
- Syracuse won their first home-opening game since 2022
- Kate Dorazio earned her first career hit in game two of the evening, an RBI single
- Tonight's contests mark the earliest calendar date for a home game in program history
- 15-0 is the largest margin of victory by Syracuse this season
- Rose Cano pitched her first complete game in a Syracuse uniform, striking out a season-high seven batters
