NEWARK, Del. - Back-to-back solo home runs from Madison Knight and Peyton Schemmer led the Syracuse softball team (13-2) over Delaware (4-7) in a tight battle on Thursday night to open the Blue Hen Invitational at Delaware Diamond. Knight delivered a strong performance on the mound, no-hitting the Blue Hens through six innings and tallying seven total strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game was a battle of the pitchers, with neither team allowing a run until the top of the sixth inning, when Knight produced the first tally of the contest with a solo shot. On the following at-bat, Schemmer added what proved to be the game-winning run with a solo home run of her own to bring the 'Cuse lead to 2-0.
The Blue Hens put up a fight in the bottom of the second, pushing one run across with an RBI double. After giving up a second hit two batters later, Knight shut down Delaware with a pair of bases-loaded strikeouts to secure the Syracuse win.
OF NOTE:
'Cuse continues play at the Blue Hen Invite tomorrow with a doubleheader against Quinnipiac and Delaware. The contests are set for 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. with the game against the Blue Hens being streamed live on FloCollege.
