NEWARK, Del. - After falling to Quinnipiac (4-6), 4-1, in the opening game of the day, the Syracuse softball team (14-3) bounced back in the nightcap, racking up eight runs on 12 total hits to take down Delaware (5-7), 8-1. Timely hitting by the middle of the Orange lineup drove in all eight runs to help backup Julianna Verni's stellar complete-game performance in the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST QUINNIPIAC:
The 'Cuse got on the board first with an RBI single from Laila Morales-Alves that brought home Jadyn Burney, who used a bunt single to get on base. Quinnipiac equalized two innings later with an RBI double to knot the game at one. The Bobcats took a one-run lead in the following frame, scoring on a wild pitch after Madison Knight came into the game to pitch for starter Rose Cano.
Quinnipiac brought its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning, sending a two-run ground-rule double to right center.
Knight shut the Bobcats down for the final two innings of the game, but Syracuse's comeback attempt fell short, as Quinnipiac took a 4-1 win over the Orange.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST DELAWARE:
'Cuse got on the board in the top of the first, plating three runs in the inning thanks to an RBI single from Angie Ramos that scored Burney, followed by a two-run double from Morales-Alves that drove in Ramos and Madelyn Lopez. The Blue Hens responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run of their own on an RBI single into right, their only run of the game.
The Orange broke the game open in the top half of the fifth, tallying three runs on three hits, extending their lead to five. Gabby Lantier started the inning off with a single up the middle, advancing to third on fielder's choice by Lopez and scoring on a single by Ramos three batters later. Ramos then rounded the bases quickly as she crossed the plate along with Lopez the following at-bat on a triple hit into right center by Morales-Alves.
The Orange bats stayed hot at the plate in the top of the sixth as they would plate two more runs on three hits. The inning was led-off by Lantier who roped a single down the left field line and then worked her way around the diamond, scoring on a Ramos sac-fly, her third RBI of the game. Breen plated the second run of the inning, scoring Burney on a RBI single to bring the lead to 8-1, which would hold as the final score to give Syracuse its bounce-back victory.
After giving up one earned run in the first, Verni quickly settled into the circle for the Orange, going the distance in her sixth win of the season. The junior allowed just one earned run, four hits, three walks, while striking out six.
