
Orange Stay Perfect as Offense Erupts on Day Two of Columbus Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Syracuse softball team (9-0) continued its strong start to the 2025 season with two more wins over Tennessee Tech (4-5) and LIU (1-8), remaining unbeaten through nine games. The Orange opened the day with a 12-1 run-rule victory in five innings over the Golden Eagles before closing out Saturday's play at The Columbus Classic with an 8-2 win over the Sharks. 'Cuse recorded a season-high 14 hits in each game, marking its best offensive outing of the season.

The Orange offense was on fire in game one, scoring 12 runs on 14 hits, both season highs. Madelyn Lopez went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Kaimi Tulua drove in four runs on two hits in her first career start. Angie Ramos also contributed offensively, going 2-for-2 with a career-high three RBIs, and Tessa Galipeau added a two-run double. Julianna Verni started on the mound, pitching four innings and allowing just one run to earn the victory. Jackie Pengel closed things out with one inning of work, striking out two Tennessee Tech batters

Syracuse kept the offense rolling in game two, defeating LIU with another 14-hit performance. Kaimi Tulua and Angie Ramos each hit solo home runs, the firsts of both of their careers, finishing the game with three and two RBIs, respectively. Ramos' home run was one of her career-best four hits in the win. Tessa Galipeau also contributed with three RBIs, going 2-for-2 at the plate. On the mound, Rose Cano started for the Orange, pitching four innings to earn the win. Madison Knight came in to close things out, striking out five over three innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST TENNESSEE TECH:
Syracuse struck first in the top of the first inning when Laila Morales-Alves singled to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error. On the play, Lopez, who had reached on a bunt single, raced from first to home to put the Orange on the board.

The Orange broke the game open with a five-run third inning. Lopez, Kelly Breen, and Morales-Alves sparked the rally with three straight singles to load the bases. In her first collegiate start, Tulua delivered a two-run single through the infield, extending the lead to 3-0. Peyton Schemmer followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Ramos, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. After a single from Taylor Posner, Galipeau capped the scoring with a two-run double to the center field fence, pushing the Orange's lead to 6-0.

The Orange kept the offense rolling in the top of the fourth, using back-to-back two-RBI singles from Ramos and Tulua to extend the lead to 10-0, marking Syracuse's second double-digit scoring game of the weekend. Gabby Lantier added the 11th run of the inning with an RBI-single, bringing home Erika Zamora for the freshman's first career run.

After Tennessee Tech scored in the bottom of the fourth, the Orange responded in the next frame as Posner grounded out to first, allowing Lauren Fox to cross home plate.

Pengel, who came in to pitch for the bottom of the fifth, shut down the Golden Eagles with two strike outs, securing the Orange's second run-rule victory of the weekend, 12-1.

The Orange continued their trend of early scoring in the nightcap against the Sharks, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lopez led off with her fourth consecutive hit of the day, a single up the middle. Breen and Morales-Alves followed with singles to load the bases, and Tulua drove in the first run with a groundout to the pitcher that allowed Lopez to score. Ramos and Galipeau then added their fourth and third RBIs of the day, respectively, extending Syracuse's early lead to three. Galipeau kept her strong offensive performance going with another pair of RBIs in the top of the third.

LIU got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run. The Sharks added another run in the following inning, cutting the lead to 5-2.

Syracuse quickly extended its three-run lead as Kaimi Tulua and Angie Ramos hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fifth inning, pushing the lead back to five. In the following inning, Tulua added her third RBI of the game, grounding out to the pitcher but bringing Breen across the plate to make it 8-2.

- Tulua earned her first collegiate start against the Golden Eagles at the designated player spot, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Her RBIs marked the first of her career. The freshman continued her strong performance against LIU, hitting her first career solo home run and adding three more RBIs to her day.
- Ramos recorded a career-high three RBIs against Tennessee Tech, going 2-for-3 at the plate. This marked her 13th career multi-hit game. The senior followed that performance with a 4-for-4 outing against LIU, including her first career home run. Her four hits against the Sharks set a new career best and made her the first 'Cuse player with four hits since Angel Jasso did it at Pittsburgh on April 19, 2024.
- Lopez returned to her hitting ways in the first game of the day, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and a walk in the win over Tennessee Tech. This marks her second three-hit game of the season and the eighth of her career. The junior also contributed one hit and one run in Syracuse's nightcap.
- Galipeau collected two RBIs against Tennessee Tech, marking her second multi-RBI game of the weekend and the 13th of her career. She followed that with three RBIs against LIU, matching her career-high and recording her 14th game with at least two RBIs.
- Breen recorded her third multi-hit game of the weekend against the Sharks, finishing the pair of games with four runs and two hits.
- Morales-Alves's secured her third and fourth games of the weekend with two hits. She also collected two runs batted in against Tennessee Tech.
- Verni made her fourth start of the season against Tennessee Tech, earning the win. The junior allowed just one run in four innings of work, while also recording two strikeouts.
- Pengel also tossed an inning against the Golden Eagles, striking out a pair to seal the win.
- Cano earned her first plate appearance with the Orange, drawing a walk. The pitcher then made her first start for Syracuse, going four innings and holding LIU to two runs.
- Knight closed out the nightcap on the mound, collecting five strikeouts in three innings of work.
- Erika Zamora made her college debut in the first game of the day, pinch running and earning her first at bat for the Orange.
- The Orange extended their best start in program history on Saturday, improving to 9-0 to begin the season. Syracuse surpassed its previous record of 6-0 from 2011 and 2022 by securing its seventh consecutive win, setting a new mark for the program.
- Syracuse moves to 3-1 all-time against Tennessee Tech and 2-0 against LIU. The Orange are also 4-0 this season against fellow New York schools and will face another one tomorrow in Army.
- After scoring in the top of the first in both games, 'Cuse is now 5-0 when scoring in the first frame.
- Syracuse's 12 runs in game one are their most in a game this season, surpassing their previous best of 10, which came yesterday against LIU. The Orange also set a season-high with 14 hits in both games.
