How it Happened
- The Orange wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, breaking through early in the opening quarter. Just over five minutes into the contest, Hattie Madden found the back of the net with Bo Madden providing the helper to give Syracuse a 1-0 advantage. The goal came as Syracuse controlled the early tempo, outshooting Stanford 2-1 in the first 15 minutes while earning a penalty corner.
- Both defenses tightened considerably in the second quarter as neither team registered a shot. The Orange maintained their slim one-goal lead heading into the halftime break, though the Cardinal had begun to settle into the game.
- Stanford emerged from intermission with renewed energy and quickly erased Syracuse's lead. In the 35th minute, Clark capitalized on a strong offensive sequence, finishing off a play set up by O'Grady and Hoppe to knot the score at 1-1. The goal came during a period where Stanford generated more offensive pressure, outshooting the Orange 2-0 in the third quarter while earning a pair of penalty corners.
- Syracuse responded less than two minutes later with what proved to be the game-winning goal. Schuurman converted on a corner opportunity in the 37th minute, with Strunk providing the insert and Hamilton on the trap to restore the Orange lead at 2-1. The goal showcased Syracuse's dangerous penalty corner unit that has been a consistent weapon throughout the season. The Orange earned three corners in the third quarter and capitalized on one of them at a crucial moment.
- The fourth quarter belonged to the Cardinal in terms of possession and pressure, but Syracuse's defense and goalkeeping rose to the occasion. Stanford fired three shots in the final 15 minutes, all of which were turned aside by Syracuse's netminders. The Orange goalies made all three of their saves when it mattered most, preserving the one-goal advantage. Stanford earned two more penalty corners in the final period as they pushed for an equalizer, but the Syracuse defense stood tall and prevented any clean looks at goal.
- Despite the late pressure, Syracuse's experienced squad managed the game well down the stretch, limiting Stanford to just six total shots on the evening while matching that output on the offensive end. The Orange's ability to convert two of their four penalty corners proved to be the difference in a tightly contested ACC matchup.
