How it Happened
- The first quarter saw Syracuse establish its offensive presence early, outshooting California 3-1 while earning three penalty corners. However, the Golden Bears' netminder stood tall, making one save in the opening period as both teams went to the first break scoreless.
- The game's decisive moment came early in the second quarter. At 17:09, Klompmaker found space in the Syracuse defensive zone and converted on an unassisted effort to give California a 1-0 lead. The Orange continued to press, registering three more shots in the period and earning three additional penalty corners, but could not find the equalizer. The California goalkeeper made two more saves before halftime to preserve the one-goal advantage.
- Syracuse intensified its attack in the third quarter, earning another penalty corner opportunity while registering three shots. The Orange defense also stepped up, holding California to just two shots in the period. King made one save in the third to keep the deficit at one goal heading into the final 15 minutes.
- The fourth quarter saw Syracuse mount a desperate offensive push, unleashing eight shots and seven penalty corners in search of the tying goal. The Orange peppered the California cage, putting five shots on target in the final period alone. However, the Golden Bears' goalkeeper delivered a heroic performance when it mattered most, turning aside all five fourth-quarter shots to complete the shutout. King did not face a shot in the final period as the Orange pressed forward, but California's defense absorbed the pressure to secure the 1-0 victory.
- The loss marked Syracuse's first shutout of the season and snapped a four-game winning streak for the Orange, who suffered their first road loss of the season. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Syracuse could not solve California's goalkeeper, who finished with nine saves compared to three for the Orange netminders.
- The defeat in Berkeley caps a challenging road swing through California for the Orange, who entered the trip looking to build on their strong start to the season.
