SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Opening J.S. Coyne Stadium for the first time this fall, the 10th-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to visiting No. 14 Ohio State on a windy Sunday afternoon.
Syracuse (2-1) got three saves from starting goalkeeper Louise Pert, but early Ohio State pressure put the Orange on their heels in the first moments of the game. Taja Gans put all three of her shots on goal, all coming on the three Syracuse corners.
The Buckeyes (4-0) scored less than 90 seconds into the game as five different Ohio State players scored. Breanna Bough and Makenna Webster recorded a goal and an assist each. Starting keeper Abby Danson made six saves in her 55 minutes of action.

How it Happened
- Ohio State got the jump on Syracuse early, picking up a corner 63 seconds into the game. A second corner 20 seconds later led to the first Buckeye goal from Katie Fitchtner, getting the stick stop from Claudia Thomas on Webster's insert.
- In the third minute, Ohio State was awarded a penalty stroke, but Pert got a stick on it to keep things at 1-0.
- The Buckeyes added to their lead 10 minutes later as Bough deked a defender during a corner situation after Riley Hudson made the initial stick stop.
- Picking up a second penalty corner, Webster stepped up and scored for a 3-0 advantage in favor of Ohio State, a lead that held into the second half.
- Forty-four seconds into the third quarter, Ohio State scored again on a corner situation as Cameryn Forgash got her stick on the ball on a Bough sweep. Just one minute later, Ohio State got its final goal as a ball got played outside the circle that was initially blocked down. Hallie Brost collected the loose ball and found the back of the net.
- The Orange had back-to-back corner chances in a 30 second span, both inserted by Lieke Leeggangers and stopped by Annabelle Vossenaar, setting up two straight Gans drag flicks that were thwarted.
- Syracuse had another scoring chance in the 53rd minute with Willemijn Boogert inserting to set up a Gans shot. That proved to be the final corner of the game for either team.
- The Orange return to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Friday for another nonconference tilt.
- Syracuse hosts Northeastern out of the CAA for a 4 p.m. start on ACC Network Extra.
- It's a double weekend at Coyne next week as Syracuse hosts Lafayette on Sunday, Sept. 15 for a 1 p.m. start at Coyne, also on ACC Network Extra.
