Dan Engelstad joined the Syracuse men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in April 2024. He had been the head coach at Mt. St. Mary's (Md.) prior to his appointment with the Orange.
ENGELSTAD COACHING CAREER
After earning his undergraduate degree in 2007, Engelstad began his coaching career at Mount St. Mary’s, serving as an assistant coach for three seasons on the staff of head coach Milan Brown. The 2007-08 squad won the Northeast Conference Championship and recorded the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament triumph, defeating Coppin State in the first round.
When Milan Brown was hired at Holy Cross, he brought Engelstad along as an assistant coach. Engelstad spent three seasons, from 2010-13, as an assistant coach with the Crusaders. Engelstad was defensive coordinator and had recruiting and scouting responsibilities.
He was appointed head coach at Southern Vermont College in 2013. He led the Mountaineers to a 104-34 (.754) overall record and a 68-10 conference mark in his five seasons. He was chosen the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Coach of the Year three times and coached Southern Vermont to four NECC Championships.
Engelstad was named head coach at Mount St. Mary’s in 2018. In his six seasons at the helm, Engelstad guided the Mountaineers to a 72-109 overall record. In 2020-21, Mount St. Mary’s won the Northeast Conference Tournament and earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Mount had its best Northeast Conference regular-season finish under Engelstad that year as well, posting a 9-7 league record and placing in a third-place tie in the final standings.
PLAYING CAREER AT ST. MARY’S
Engelstad was a member of the men’s basketball team at St. Mary’s (Md.) for four seasons. He was a team captain and finished his Seahawk tenure as the school’s career leader in assists (419).
He graduated from St. Mary’s in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Engelstad and his wife, Camille, have three daughters: Laney, Elise and Keira.
