
Orange Compete at Providence and Duke

The Syracuse track and field teams opened the weekend at Duke and Providence on Friday, the first of two scheduled days of racing for 'Cuse.
In day one-of-two at Duke, Emanuel Joseph (13.99 seconds) had the second-fastest prelim time in the 110-meter hurdles, advancing to the final, where he'll be joined by a pair of teammates. Isaiah Lewis (14.15 seconds) and Naseem Smith (14.24 seconds) also advanced. Isaiah Hayes (14.42 seconds) was 12th overall, followed by David Peters (14.60 seconds).
Taleea Buxton advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.73 seconds.
Freshman Malachi James (10.72) took 14th in the men's 100-meter dash. In the women's race, Kahniya James ran a time of 12.23 seconds to finish 31st overall. Olivia Garner (12.44 seconds) also raced for the Orange.
At the Friar Invitational, Baneet Bains and Justus Holden-Betts swept the top-two spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Bains (10:35.95), bested Holden Betts (10:37.58) for the meet win. Â
Olivia Joly turned in a top-10 performance in the 3,000-meter run. Her time of 10:18.01 earned her seventh. Connell Alford (8:39.22) finished eighth in the men's race.
Solmon Holden-Betts was ninth in the mile, to lead five SU competitors in the event. He crossed the line in 4:09.73, followed two spots behind by Omar Alsaidi (4:11.68). Ruben Rojas Betanzos (4:12.47) was 14th, Julian Franjieh (4:12.85) placed 16th and Gabriel Planty (4:19.30) took 36th.
All four Orange runners in the 5k set new collegiate bests. Beatriz Fernandez (17:27.19) was the top finisher in 12th, followed immediately behind by Olivia Shattuck (17:28.16). Lauren Augustyn (17:28.70) was 15th, before Leah Futey (17:35.79) finished 19th.
Shayla Ford was 10th in the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 1:00.72. Teammate Mia Hernandez placed three spots behind in 1:02.82.
Blake Parker (2:24.12) and Emily Rutkowski (2:25.25) competed in the 800, both setting new personal bests.
Action continues on Saturday at Duke.
Lizzie Bigelow (5:18.86) raced in the women's mile, crossing the line in 5:18.86.
