SYRACUSE, New York – Freshman Mileena Cotter scored on an assist from grad student Emma Ward to give No. 11/10 Syracuse women's lacrosse a 14-13 win against No. 7/6 Stanford in a double overtime thriller in the JMA Wireless Dome. The victory improves the Orange's record to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in ACC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse led, 13-11, with 8:23 to play in regulation before Stanford (6-1, 2-1) scored back-to-back goals to tie the game with 2:14 remaining. 'Cuse goalkeeper Daniella Guyette made two saves in the final five seconds, one coming with one second on the clock, to force overtime.
Both goalkeepers made saves in the first three-minute session of the first overtime. The Cardinal won the draw to start the second three-minute session, but junior defender Coco Vandiver caused a turnover and picked up a ground ball to give Syracuse possession. Stanford goalkeeper Lucy Pearson stopped Ward's shot with six seconds remaining to send the game to a second overtime period.
Stanford won the draw to start the second OT, but a turnover and a ground ball by Vandiver gave Syracuse another chance for the game winner. The Orange worked the ball around the perimeter and with five seconds on the shot clock, Ward connected with Cotter, who was cutting toward goal. She took the pass and buried her shot to give Syracuse its second top-10 win of the season.
OF NOTE
Vandiver finished with six caused turnovers, matching her career she set earlier this season against Cornell. That total ties for second on Syracuse's single-game record list. Vandiver also picked up a career-high four ground balls.
Guyette finished with 11 saves, marking the fifth time in the last six games that she has recorded 10 or more saves. She entered Wednesday's game ranked 10th in the nation in saves.
Ward led Syracuse with five points (1g, 4a). Junior Emma Muchnick posted her second hat trick of the season, while Cotter sophomore Ashlee Volpe and freshman Molly Guzik had two goals apiece.
The game was the Orange's fourth this season against a team ranked in the top 10. Syracuse is now 2-2 in those contests.
