SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team (20-11, 1-8 ACC) jumped out to an early lead and maintained control the rest of the way, defeating Le Moyne (8-19, 1-6 NEC), 6-0, on Wednesday at the Le Moyne Softball Complex. The Orange's victory was highlighted by Taylor Davison's first career home run, as the catcher played a key role in securing Syracuse's third win of the season over the Dolphins.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Syracuse struck first with a three-run second inning to take an early lead. Davison opened the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice, while Laila Morales-Alves crossed the plate on a Dolphins' throwing error. Sophia Taliaferro capped off the inning with an RBI ground out, giving the Orange a strong start.
Â
Davison tacked on a pair of runs the following frame for 'Cuse with her-first career home run, a two-run shot to center field.
Â
Gabby Lantier added the sixth run for 'Cuse in the top of the final frame, capitalizing on a throwing error that also allowed Angie Ramos to get on base following her at bat.
Â
Julianna Verni delivered a dominant start in the circle, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight. Jackie Pengel took over in relief, closing out the final two innings and recording three strikeouts, all coming in the seventh, to secure the shutout victory for the Orange.
