Syracuse Ends 17-Game Slide Against #5 Cornell

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Orange women's ice hockey team delivered another thrilling shootout performance Tuesday evening to end the 17 game slide against Cornell in a 2-0 shootout win after ending in a 2-2 regulation tie at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse (6-10-2) showed resilience after erasing a third-period deficit to force overtime and ultimately prevailed in the shootout. The Orange were outshot 50-37 but received a career-high performance from Ava Drabyk, who made 48 saves through regulation and overtime, plus two crucial stops in the shootout to secure the tie and shootout victory.
Despite a strong performance offensively in regulation, the Big Red (9-2-1) came up short in the shootout despite efforts from Karel Prefontaine and Mckenna Van Gelder. Annelies Bergmann made 35 saves on the evening.
How it Happened
- The first period featured plenty of action but no goals as both goaltenders stood tall. Drabyk made 16 saves to keep the game scoreless.
- Cornell broke through at 6:39 of the second period when Prefontaine scored a goal assisted by Avi Adam and Van Gelder.
- The Orange answered at 14:49 of the second period when Mik Todd scored her first goal of the season assisted by Makenna Williment to tie the game heading into the third.
- The Big Red regained the lead at 7:56 of the third period on a power play goal by Van Gelder on a pass from Piper Grober.
- Late in the third period, Stella Costabile buried the equalizing goal at 15:12 assisted by Charlotte Hallett and Rachel Walsh, sending the game to overtime.
- In the overtime period both teams had quality chances but neither could break through.
- In the shootout, 'Cuse struck first when Heidi Knoll converted her attempt. Nea Tervonen then sealed the victory with another successful shot, while Drabyk shut down both Cornell shooters (Prefontaine and Grober) to secure the dramatic 2-0 shootout win.
Behind the Numbers
- Costabile led the Orange offense with six shots on goal and the crucial game-tying goal.
- Celia Wiegand had five blocked shots to lead the SU defense.
- Drabyk's 48 saves plus her perfect shootout performance breaks her career high total saves of 44 from her collegiate debut against Minnesota-Duluth.
- Emma Gnade won 10 of 19 faceoffs.
