COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five Syracuse University field hockey players were selected to the NFHCA Mideast All-Region Team. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) made its annual all-region announcement on Wednesday.
Bo van Kempen, Willemijn Boogert, Berber Bakermans, Bo Madden and Lieke Leeggangers were named to the Mideast All-Region Team. Boogert, Bakermans and van Kempen were selected to the First Team, with Madden and Leeggangers appearing on the Second Team.
A First Team All-ACC selection, van Kempen led the Orange scoring efforts with 33 points on 15 goals and three assists. She scored goals on 13 penalty corners while also going two-for-two at the penalty spot. She accounted for nine game-winning goals in her graduate season, ranking second in the country in that category. The Zevenaar, Netherlands product ranked No. 14 nationally in goals per game (0.79) and was eighth in the country with eight defensive saves, which ranked second in the ACC.
Selected Second Team All-ACC, Boogert picks up All-Region honors for a second-straight year. Also selected to the NFHCA Senior Team, Boogert was second for the Orange this year with 23 points thanks to seven goals and a team-best nine assists. She scored on half of her shots on goal and helped limit opponent breakaway chances. Boogert carried a seven-game point streak in the middle of the season and was a primary insert for the Syracuse penalty corner unit, inserting eight that eventually led to goals.
Playing with the Orange as a graduate student, Bakermans earns All-Region honors for a third year in a row after picking up Mid-Atlantic honors with Delaware in the previous two seasons. Serving as a co-captain this year, Bakermans played in all 20 games, making 19 starts including the final 17 of the season. Bakermans finished the year with nine points behind a goal at No. 4 Virginia (Oct. 18) and seven assists, including a pair of helpers at Bucknell (Oct. 24).
Earning All-Region honors for the first time in her career, Madden played in all 20 games this year as both a midfielder and a center back. She made 14 starts for the Orange, including the final 11 games of the year. She racked five points on a goal with three assists against No. 14 Princeton, at Bucknell and at No. 8 UConn. Bo Madden scored once on her lone penalty stroke attempt as well.
Another co-captain, Leeggangers played in all 20 games at both forward and midfield. She started in 18 games, including the final 16 of the year. She finished her junior campaign with three goals and three assists, tying a career best in all three scoring categories. Two of her three assists came in ACC action against top 20 teams: No. 16 Louisville and No. 18 California. Leeggangers served as a corner injector as well, putting in 18 corners this year.
The NFHCA will announce its All-America teams, selected from the All-Region teams, in mid-December. Stay tuned to Cuse.com for announcements.
