A former club and Division II student-athlete with six years experience as an assistant coach, Matthew Soderstrom brought a depth of knowledge and passion for collegiate volleyball to the Syracuse sideline.
He joined the Orange in 2011 after two seasons as an assistant coach at Northeastern University where he was involved in all aspects of the program. During his time at NU, Soderstrom helped guide the Huskies to a 34-23 overall record, a third-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association standings and runner-up status at the conference tournament. He also mentored three All-CAA selections, including 2010 CAA Player of the Year and AVCA All-East Region Honorable Mention selection Britney Brown and 2010 CAA Rookie of the Year Janelle Tucker.
In 2008, Soderstrom served as an assistant coach on the St. John’s staff where he helped the Red Storm capture the BIG EAST regular-season title with a 12-2 record in conference play while working with three AVCA All-Americans, the BIG EAST Libero of the Year and BIG EAST Player of the Year.
Soderstrom began his collegiate coaching career at Western Connecticut State University where he served as assistant coach for two seasons and has additional experience coaching at both the high school and club levels.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 2007, where he was a member of the men’s club volleyball team and was named a 2006 NECVL All-New England selection. After graduating from Connecticut, he played one season at the University of New Haven where he tallied 184 kills, 34 aces and 70 total blocks, ranking 10th nationally with .44 aces per game.
A native of Rocky Hill, Conn., Soderstrom earned a master’s degree in sports leadership from Northeastern in December 2010.
