The Syracuse University volleyball team (13-9, 5-7 ACC) fell to #15 Miami on Sunday afternoon at the James L. Knight Sports Complex, dropping a four-set match to the Hurricanes. Syracuse won the opening set 29-27 but fell in the next three, 25-12, 25-23, and 25-19.
Gabby McLaughlin led the Orange with 13 kills on 58 attacks, adding six digs and a solo block. Setter Tehya Maeva distributed 28 assists while also leading the team with six service aces. Maeva's six aces was a single-match career high. Skylar George contributed seven kills and a team-high 13 digs. Soana Lea'ea was in on five blocks, leading the Orange. Miami's Flormarie Heredia Colon led all players with 33 kills on a .364 hitting percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle featuring 14 ties and two lead changes. Syracuse trailed 24-22 before rallying to tie it at 24-24. The Orange eventually prevailed 29-27, with McLaughlin recording a service ace to close out the set.
Miami dominated the second set, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. The Hurricanes posted back-to-back service aces midway through and cruised to a 25-12 victory. Syracuse struggled offensively, hitting just .026 in the frame with seven kills against six errors.
The third set saw Syracuse mount several runs to stay within striking distance. Maeva's service run helped the Orange tie it at 10-10, and another surge brought them within one at 21-20. Miami closed strong, however, taking the set 25-23 behind Miami's Flormarie Heredia Colon's offensive performance.
Miami pulled away in the fourth set despite Syracuse's early effort. The Hurricanes rattled off a 6-0 run to build a commanding 10-2 lead. Behind another strong string of serves from Maeva, the Orange fought back with a 7-2 stretch to cut the deficit to 11-9. Yet, Miami regained control and closed out the match 25-19.
