Lakisha Covington is in her fifth season as a member of the Orange coaching staff and in her third year as the coordinator of player development. Covington supervises all aspects of the student-athletes’ welfare, including academic, personal, social and physical well-being.
Covington served as an assistant on head coach Quentin Hillsman’s staff in 2006-07 when she worked with all aspects of the program, including player development and team travel. As SU’s director of basketball operations in 2005-06, Covington was responsible for organizing team travel, as well as assisting with home recruiting visits. She was also in charge of film exchange, organizing SU’s summer camp, and helping with marketing and promotion of the program.
Her most recent stop before coming to Syracuse was at Elon University in North Carolina where she was an assistant coach in 2004-05. At Elon, Covington served as team travel coordinator and assisted the head coach with recruiting, practice and game preparation. She also handled the team’s alumni relations and organized fall basketball clinics. Prior to joining the Phoenix, Covington was an assistant coach for four seasons. She served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va., from 2002-04 and spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant coach at Greensboro College.
While at Saint Paul’s, Covington mentored two guards who were ranked in the top 10 in the nation in Division II women’s basketball. She also served as Saint Paul’s head volleyball and softball coach, in addition to her role as an assistant with the women’s basketball program.
Covington worked as an instructor at the YES Clinic at the 2005 Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind., as well as the Women’s Coaches Academy in 2004. At the Women’s Coaches Academy, she shared fundamentals, methods and coaching philosophies with the participants. That same year, Covington was selected to be an assistant coach at the CIAA vs. NYCAC All-Star Game. She also participated in the 2003-04 National Youth Sports Program and the 2002-03 Duke University Coaches Clinic where she spoke on a variety of topics, including proper weight training and maintaining player confidence.
A four-year letterwinner at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina from 1997-2001, Covington competed in the 2001 Black College All-Star Game. She was also a member of the Winston-Salem volleyball and cross country teams. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2001.
