
Women's Basketball Concludes Season in NCAA Tournament

STORRS, Conn.- The No. 9 seed Orange women's basketball team (24-9, 12-6) concluded its season after falling to No. 1 seed Connecticut (36-0, 20-0) 98-45 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Journey Thompson scored on a second chance in the paint to start the second round of the NCAA Tournament off for the Orange. Uche Izoje led the team, scoring four points in the first quarter on back-to-back jumpers. Defensively, Izoje added a block and a steal to the scorebook. SU trailed the Huskies 33-8 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Angelica Velez and Keira Scott stepped up, both adding a field goal to the board, as Sophie Burrows added a block against Connecticut. 'Cuse was unable to catch up in the second quarter, trailing 65-12 after the first half.
Thompson opened the second half, scoring on a fast break. 'Cuse would go on an 11-0 run, scoring in three consecutive possessions as Olivia Schmitt hit the first three-pointer of the night and Laila Phelia scored two jumpers. Phelia shot two from the line, and Thompson put up a second chance layup, keeping the Huskies scoreless for 3:37 of play. Phelia rounded out the third quarter with a fastbreak steal, but Syracuse still fell behind 82-29.
Izoje sneaked into the paint to score a field goal on a second chance shot. Sophie Burrows added a jumper, as Izoje followed with a layup in the next possession. The Orange went on a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter, as Izoje reached the double-digit scoring mark for the 26th time this season. Syracuse's final strides weren't enough as the Orange fell to No. 1 Connecticut 98-45 to conclude its 2026 campaign in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
OF NOTE
- For the 26th time this season, Uche Izoje scored in double figures.
- Laila Phelia recorded double-digit points for the 24th time this season.
- Maddy Potts made her second consecutive start this season.
- The Orange scored 20 points in the paint against the Huskies.
- SU tallied five steals and three blocks against Connecticut.
