After 84 minutes of a scoreless draw, Virginia Tech (6-1-3, 2-0-0) solved Syracuse's defense (3-5-2, 0-3-0) with Hannah Pachan posting her second goal of the season in a 1-0 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
Scoring opportunities were few and far between for much of the match. With the game clock winding down, Virginia Tech's Eliana Salama gathered the ball just above the final third and passed right wing to Riley Karpinski. Karpinski drove toward the end line and sent a perfect cross in front that reached Hannah Pachan, who connected with the open net. The tally, with 5:23 left, was the only score of the contest.
GALBUS, INCORVAIA, STEPHENS-MARTIN PUSH ATTACK
Senior midfielder Moo Galbus was the first to challenge Virginia Tech goalkeeper Julianna Trujillo. Junior Farrah Stephens-Martin kept a Hokie defender at bay and delivered to Galbus, who had an open shot 15:39 into the match that Trujillo saved.Â
Sophomore forward Abby Incorvaia put two of her three attempts on goal. Both came in the second half. Stephens-Martin also had a second-half attempt on target.
ONE LAST 'CUSEÂ THREAT
Despite falling behind, the Orange continued to press the Hokies. Syracuse managed its best attempt in the final 30 seconds. After earning a corner kick, Syracuse saw the ball deflect to junior Gabby Wisbeck. She carried on the left side and shot left-footed. The attempt hit off the crossbar with 22 ticks on the clock.
NAIMOLI STEADY AGAIN
Naimoli, who made her ninth start in goal for Syracuse, finished with five saves. It was the fifth time this season she made four or more stops.
Naimoli made a stellar stop early in the contest. Virginia Tech's Eliana Salama made a strong spin move with the ball that created space and had a clear attempt on goal. Naimoli extended to knock the try away, 18:08 into the first half. A second-half Virginia Tech corner tested Naimoli again. Anna Weir settled the ball in the penalty area and managed a close drive that Naimoli covered.
