Syracuse women's basketball junior guard Sophie Burrows has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Kay Yow Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. The honor represents the ACC's highest individual recognition combining academic achievement and athletic excellence.
Burrows, a native of Lower Plenty, Melbourne, Australia, has been a cornerstone of the Orange program both on and off the court. The psychology major carries a 3.93 cumulative GPA and is a two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team, demonstrating a sustained commitment to excellence in the classroom throughout her collegiate career.
"Sophie's recognition as the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year is a reflection of everything she has poured into her time here at Syracuse - in the classroom, on the court, and in our community," said Faculty Athletics Representative Mary Graham. "She exemplifies what it means to be a Syracuse student-athlete, achieving both academic and athletic excellence. This honor is a testament to her extraordinary dedication, intellectual curiosity, and competitive excellence. We couldn't be more proud to call her Orange."
On the hardwood, Burrows has been one of Syracuse's most reliable contributors this season, appearing in 28 of the Orange's 29 games while serving as a consistent offensive weapon. The second-year captain is averaging 11.1 points per game and adding 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.1 assists per game this season.Â
The Kay Yow Scholar Athlete Award is presented annually by the ACC and honors the memory of longtime NC State head coach Kay Yow, who exemplified the ideals of integrity, dedication, and excellence throughout her Hall of Fame career.
Burrows is the first ACC women's basketball player to be named the Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year since SU joined the ACC in 2013.Â
