No. 15 Virginia (6-2-2, 2-2-0) scored three times in a five-minute span late in the second half and defeated Syracuse (4-6-2, 1-3-0), 4-0, on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
Syracuse goalkeeper Maya Naimoli, a junior, equaled her season-high save total with eight stops.
How The Match Was Decided
The game-winning goal came early in the contest. Virginia's Ella Carter started the play with a corner kick into the box and Giovana Canali headed the ball into the net, 8:48 into the match. Canali's goal was her third of the season.
Virginia Run Closes Out The Contest
The score remained 1-0 until late in the second half when Virginia unleashed a flurry of scores. Aniyah Collier started the stretch with her third goal of the season at 79:46. Addison Halpern stole the ball near midfield and led Virginia's transition before feeding Collier who attacked the net and tapped a shot past Naimoli with her right foot. Just 3:14 later, Jordyn Hardeman pushed the hosts' advantage to 3-0, stopping just outside of the box and drilling a left-footed attempt into the upper corner. Hardeman finished off the three goals in 5:06 of play with her third goal of the year on a penalty kick.
Naimoli, ACC Save Leader, Adds To Total
Naimoli entered the match ranked first in the conference in saves. She made eight saves for the second consecutive outing. Naimoli also had eight saves in Syracuse's 2-1 victory against Pittsburgh on Sept. 24.
She was tested throughout the game, but especially in the first 45 minutes when she came up with six stops. Her best save came 3:31 into the match. A Virginia corner kick found Canali alone in front but her attempt from point-blank range was turned away by Naimoli.
Notable Numbers
The Orange will face a second straight nationally-ranked opponent when Syracuse hosts Stanford on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Admission is free at the SU Soccer Stadium.
