Â
Syracuse (12-9, 3-5) is back at the JMA Wireless Dome to host Notre Dame (11-10, 2-6 ACC) on Saturday evening.
Â
Honoring the Late Lawrence Moten
Syracuse University will honor the legacy of the late Lawrence Moten at halftime of Saturday's game.
Â
A ceremony featuring highlights of Moten's career will be held in recognition of his many accomplishments in basketball and in the Syracuse community, with members of his family in attendance. Moten passed away on September 30 at the age of 53.
Â
The Washington D.C. native is Syracuse's all-time leading scorer, having notched 2,334 points across 121 games over four seasons (1991-95). Moten was one of 25 players named to the Syracuse All-Century team during the 1999-00 season, and Syracuse retired his No. 21 jersey number on March 3, 2018.
Â
Donnie Domination
The Orange are led by sophomore Donnie Freeman, who is averaging 19.2 points and 7.4 rebounds across 12 appearances.
Â
Freeman missed time in non-conference play due to injury, but has been a significant contributor since returning to the floor during ACC-play. The sophomore forward has scored in double figures in all 12 contests and gone over 20 points six times. Since beginning league play, Freeman is averaging 19.9 points, good for the fourth most in the league.
Â
During Syracuse's three-game winning streak earlier this month, Freeman posted 20 points or more in each contest, including a career-best 27 points against Georgia Tech. In his most recent outing, he scored a team-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against NC State for his second double-double of the season.
Â
Orange by the Numbers
The Orange come into the contest among one of the ACC's best 3-point shooting teams as of late. Since beginning league-play, Syracuse is shooting 63-of-168 (.375), the third highest percentage of any ACC team during that stretch. On the defensive end, the Orange have surrendered just 49-of-161 (.304) shots from beyond the arc, the second-fewest in the conference.
Â
Sophomore Tyler Betsey and senior Nate Kingz have led the charge from 3-point range. Kingz has buried at least one triple in 10 consecutive games, including hitting five 3-pointers against Boston College. Betsey has connected on 10-of-19 (.526) shots from beyond the arc in his last five games. He converted a career-high six 3-pointers in the win over Florida State.
Â
The Orange defense has held opponents to 69.9 points per game this season while ranking second nationally in blocks at 7.1 per game, trailing only Georgia (7.9).
Â
Senior William Kyle III is a key reason for the Orange's defensive dominance, averaging 2.71 blocks per game for the third best mark in the nation. He has recorded at least one block in all but two contests this season, including 12 games with three or more. He's contributed on the offensive end as well, averaging 9.5 points per contest.
Â
Scouting Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish come to Syracuse at 11-10 overall and 2-6 in the ACC this season. Notre Dame has lost six of their last seven but took #17/17 Virginia to double overtime before falling, 100-97, earlier this week.
Â
Notre Dame got out to a 9-3 start this season but has struggled since losing leading scorer Markus Burton to injury in early December, going 4-7 in his absence.
Â
The Fighting Irish have leaned on freshman Jalen Haralson to supplement the offense, averaging 15.0 points across 20 appearances. He was the highest-rated prospect to commit to Notre Dame in modern history, joining the program as a consensus five-star and top-ranked high school prospect in Indiana. He is shooting 111-of-226 (.491) from the floor.
Â
Braeden Shrewsberry is Notre Dame's top threat from beyond the arc, leading the ACC in 3-point field goal percentage after making 58-of-138 (.420) attempts from deep. He knocked down five triples in the most recent contest against Virginia. Shrewsberry buried a season-high eight 3-point shots earlier this season in a contest against Evansville.
Â
The Fighting Irish are led by Micah Shrewsberry. Shrewsberry is in his third season at Notre Dame after spending two years at Penn State, where he led the Nittany Lions to the 2023 NCAA Tournament, their first appearance since 2011.Â
Â
Series History
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Notre Dame, 35-24, and has won four of the last five matchups. The Orange won last year's tilt, 77-69, with senior J.J. Starling leading the squad with 21 points.
