Orange Down Big Red 3-0 On Senior Day
9/7/2025 3:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Midfielder Gabby Wisbeck, and forwards Anna Rupert and Mia Klammer, each scored a goal apiece as Syracuse (4-1-3) defeated Cornell (2-2-2) on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Stadium.Â
This result was the third consecutive shutout for the Orange. The last time Syracuse recorded three consecutive shutouts came in 2024, where the Orange won 2-0 vs. Siena on Aug. 22, 5-0 vs. Mercyhurst on Aug. 25 and 1-0 vs. Northwestern on Aug. 29.Â
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
The winning goal for Syracuse came at the 27:00 mark of the first half. After a long throw-in by Klammer, forward Maya McDermott squared a ball across the box that was intercepted by the Cornell defense. An errant pass across the box fell to Wisbeck, whose right-footed strike clipped off a Cornell defender and into the right corner of the net.Â
SECOND HALF SURGE
The Orange came out firing to start the second half. At the 54:44 mark, Rupert latched onto a long-ball just past the midfield line, outpacing the Cornell center back. After her initial attempt was saved by Cornell goalkeeper Samantha Qureshey, the ball fell to Rupert's right and the senior made no mistake, lacing the ball into the top of the net for her first goal of the season.
It took Syracuse just 24 seconds to find the back of the net again. Klammer began from her own half, laying off a pass to McDermott and making an overlapping run. McDermott then lofted a pass back to Klammer who neatly converted to the bottom-right corner. It gave Klammer a squad-best five tallies in 2025.
NO GOAL ZONE
Senior goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch has now recorded four shutouts in the first eight games of the season, including a stretch of three straight. Her previous career high in a season was three, which she achieved in both the 2022 and 2024 seasons.Â
SENIOR CELEBRATION
On a day where seniors were celebrated for the Orange, multiple had a big impact on the game. Rupert had a goal while McDermott added an assist and Vanderbosch held Cornell off the scoresheet. Mackenzie Dupre and Aleena Ulke both contributed off the bench. Ava Uribe did not play because of injury.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse plays its third of five-straight at home when it hosts ACC foe Southern Methodist on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
