COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Just days from the opening game of the 2025 season, Syracuse University field hockey was ranked 11th in Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for the preseason.
Syracuse, which went 13-7 last year and earned another berth to the NCAA Tournament, was tied for 11th with 99 points, just 11 points shy of the top 10. The Orange were tied with UConn, which Syracuse beat 2-0 in an exhibition game earlier this month.
Reigning national champion Northwestern collected 200 points and all 10 first-place votes to claim the top spot. North Carolina was second with 188 points while Virginia (173), Maryland (155) and Duke (149) rounded out the top five.
This season, Syracuse will challenge nine other teams ranked in the top 20 of the preseason poll: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Virginia, No. 5 Duke, No. 8 Boston College, No. 10 Princeton, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 16 Rutgers, No. 18 Penn State, and No. 20 Wake Forest.
Syracuse opens the 2025 season on Friday with a 5 p.m. showdown against Lock Haven, followed by a 1 p.m. game on Sunday against Fairfield. All games at J.S. Coyne Stadium are complimentary admission and will be carried live on ACC Network Extra.
