THE GAME
- It's down to four teams all vying to win the final game of the season as Syracuse men's lacrosse returns to Championship Weekend for the first time since 2013.
- Syracuse plays its fourth rematch of a regular season meeting on Saturday, taking on No. 3 and second-seeded Maryland at 2:30 p.m. at Gillette Stadium on ESPN2.
- Syracuse has been stacking one-goal wins and doing so in a variety of ways - surviving a rock fight against Duke in the ACC Championship, rallying past Harvard for an overtime win to begin NCAA play and most recently a fast-paced thriller against Princeton last weekend.
- The Orange reach Championship Weekend for the first time in the Gary Gait Era after picking off third-seeded Princeton 19-18 last weekend at James M. Shuart Stadium.
- Maryland (13-3) reaches Championship Weekend for the 11th time under head coach John Tillman, knocking off local rival Georgetown 9-6 on Saturday in Annapolis.
- ESPN2 will carry Saturday's 2:30 p.m. game from Gillette Stadium with Anish Shroff '04, Syracuse All-American midfielder Paul Carcaterra '97, and Quinn Kessenich, in the booth. Dana Boyle will have the report from the sidelines.
- Tim Leonard '20 (play-by-play) and Kyle Fetterly '09 (analyst) take to the airwaves on Syracuse Sports Network and TK99/105 locally, Cuse.com, The Varsity App, and TuneIn App, as well as Syracuse University student-radio station WAER.
- Westwood One Sports will also carry audio coverage of Championship Weekend. Games can be found on SiriusXM 84, the Westwood One Sports App, streamed free on WestwoodOneSports.com/ncaaplayer, and the Varsity Network App, and Tune In App if you have a premium account.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE WEEKEND
- It's been a long time coming but Syracuse men's lacrosse is back to Championship Weekend for the first time since 2013 when the Orange reached the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship game against Duke.
- Syracuse has had plenty of success in the final weekend of play, carrying a 17-10 record in the Semifinal round alongside an 11-6 record in the final game, bringing Syracuse's Championship Weekend record to a 28-16 record.
- The Orange and Terrapins have some familiarity in the final two games of the season. Syracuse meets Maryland in the semifinals for the first time since 1997. The Terps won that game in an 18-17 shootout in College Park.
- Gillette Stadium has been a kind venue to the Orange, bringing a 4-1 record with them to Foxborough this weekend. Syracuse is unblemished in Championship Weekend at Gillette with the lone blemish a 6-5 overtime loss against Maryland in the 2011 quarterfinals, the last NCAA Tournament meeting between programs.
- Foxborough is the site of Syracuse's last two NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse championships in 2008 and the unforgettable 2009 title game against Cornell, a team Syracuse could see on Monday.
- Gillette Stadium is the site of the program's fourth-most wins at a single venue outside of the JMA Wireless Dome. Syracuse is 10-6 at SECU Stadium (College Park, Md.), 8-3 at SHI Stadium (Piscataway, N.J.) and 6-0 at James M. Shuart Stadium (Hempstead, N.Y.).
WICKED CLOSE TO HOME
- This weekend will be a big homecoming weekend for several members of the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team.Â
- Three players call Massachusetts home: Carter Rice (SSDM), John Mullen (FO), and Jimmy McCool (Goalie)
- Defensive midfielder Nathan LeVine hails from Gilford, New Hampshire, a two and a half hour drive from Gillette.
- Freshman defenseman Dillion Stephens is from New Canaan, Connecticut while classmate attackman Owen O'Farrell resides in Providence, Rhode Island, a 25 minute drive to Foxborough.Â
- While he matriculated from Hopewell Junction, New York, freshman midfielder/attackman Payton Anderson attended The Brunswick School in Greenwich, Connecticut.
A WIN ON SATURDAY WOULD...
- Advance Syracuse to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse National Championship for the first time since 2013.
- Bump the Orange record to 18-10 in the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament.
- Snap a seven-game skid against University of Maryland dating back to a quarterfinal game against the Terps in 2011, a 6-5 loss at Gillette.
- Improve Syracuse to 14-5 overall, the most wins in a season since the Orange went 16-4 in 2013, reaching the NCAA Championship game.
- Bump Syracuse's rematch record this season to 4-0 with wins in the second meeting against Duke, Notre Dame, and Harvard.
- See the Orange win their fifth-straight game, the second-longest winning streak of the year behind a six-game run in the midseason.
- See Syracuse win its 72nd NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship game.
- Be the program's third-ever win as the national six seed (first ever postseason as the six seed).
- Mark the 10th win over a top 20 team this season, surpassing last season's total including the postseason.
- Pick up the sixth top-10 win for the Orange this season.
- Be the 962nd win in program history, second-most among Division I programs.
THE MARYLAND SERIES
- Saturday will be the 22nd time Syracuse and Maryland meet on the lacrosse field since the series opened all the way back in 1927.
- Maryland leads the all-time series 15-6, winning the last seven meetings including an 11-7 win back in February in College Park.
- The Orange and Terrapins meet in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time, a series that is evenly split at four wins a side.
- Syracuse has not played Maryland in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 in the Quarterfinal round in nearby Providence.
- Saturday will be the second time Syracuse and Maryland clash in Foxborough. Maryland won the previous showdown 6-5 in overtime during the 2011 quarterfinals.
- Syracuse is 2-1 all-time against Maryland in the NCAA Semifinals with Saturday's clash the first neutral-site semifinal meeting between teams. Syracuse won 12-5 in 1983 at the Dome before collecting an 18-8 win down in College Park in 1989. Maryland nipped the Orange in 1997 in an 18-17 thriller in College Park.
