Former Orange standout Tajon Buchanan scored in the 80th minute to lift Villarreal to a 3-2 victory against Barcelona on Sunday in the penultimate game of the LaLiga season. Villarreal came back from a 2-1 deficit at halftime to beat the newly crowned La Liga champions, which had not lost a match since last December.
Â
Buchanan entered the game in the second half and 16 minutes later, found the back of the net off a low cross at the far post. It was his first goal in Spanish fútbol and sealed a place in the UEFA Champions Football League next season for Villareal.
Â
Sunday's goal was the first for Buchanan since he joined Villareal on loan from Inter Milan at the end of the winter transfer window. He has now scored a goal in Belgium with Club Brugge, Serie A with Italy and LaLiga.
Â
Buchanan began his professional career with the New England Revolution. The forward was selected with the ninth overall selection in the 2019 Major League Soccer SuperDraft after signing a Generation adidas contract. Buchanan played parts of three seasons with New England (2019-21), totaling 60 matches and 34 starts. During the 2021 campaign, the Canadian product scored eight goals and tallied 21 points in 27 contests, earning a nomination to the 2021 MLS All-Star Game and member of the 2021 MLS Best XI.
In two seasons at Syracuse, he scored 12 goals and recorded 30 points across 33 matches. As a freshman in 2017, the forward was named to the All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Freshman Team. Buchanan had a breakout season as a sophomore, posting eight goals and 20 points en route to All-ACC First Team, All-ECAC First Team and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team honors.
Internationally, Buchanan has played for Team Canada since 2021, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with former Syracuse teammate and current Portland Timbers defender Kamal Miller. Buchanan assisted on Alphonso Davies' goal, giving Canada its first goal in FIFA World Cup history.
