After spending just over a week off from competition, Syracuse (5-3) returns to action against Saint Joseph's (6-3) at the JMA Wireless Dome on Thursday evening.
Riding the Momentum
The Orange are coming off a win over #13/13 Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 2. With just five games remaining before the ACC opener against Clemson, Syracuse will look to build off the victory with Saint Joseph's next up on the schedule.
The triumph over Tennessee came down to the end, with a couple of players stepping up in big moments to secure the win. The Orange found themselves trailing, 56-55, with just over three minutes remaining. Needing a timely bucket, senior J.J. Starling delivered, knocking down a go-ahead 3-pointer before finishing a contested layup to give the Orange a 60-56 advantage.
The Volunteers rallied back to tie it up at 60. With 13 ticks left, Starling found senior William Kyle III cutting to the basket, who was fouled on his way up for the shot. He sank a free throw to give Syracuse a 61-60 edge. On the next possession, Syracuse's defense forced Jaylen Carey into a contested attempt. The shot was off the mark, and Sadiq White Jr. grabbed the rebound before being fouled. He knocked down a free throw to seal the 62-60 victory.
Home Sweet Home
The Orange have defended their home court in 2025-26, and are sitting at an unblemished 4-0 record in the JMA Wireless Dome.
In the four games at home, Syracuse is averaging 77.0 points per game while holding opponents to just 55.8 points.
In front of the home crowd, Syracuse has dominated in all facets. Notably, the Orange have held opposing offenses in check, limiting opponents to just 75-of-225 (.333) shooting. Meanwhile, Syracuse has knocked down 115-of-224 (.513) attempts. The Orange also average 8.3 blocks and 8.8 steals per game while winning those contests by an average of 21.3 points.
Group Contributions
Four different members of the Orange are averaging double-digit scoring over the past four games, with Starling and senior Nate Kingz leading the way at 10.8 points per game. The veteran guard duo scored half of the Orange's 62 points in the win over Tennessee with Kingz going for 19 and Starling notching 12. Kyle III and sophomore Tyler Betsey are both averaging 10.0 points per game during the same stretch.
White Jr. has earned the start in four consecutive games for the Orange and made an impact on both ends of the floor. The rookie is averaging 9.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while disrupting passing lanes and using his length to affect shots on the defensive end.
Kyle III has contributed defensively as well, tallying 22 blocks already this season. He rejected six shots against Tennessee in addition to his 10 points.
Scouting Saint Joseph's
The Hawks come to Syracuse as winners of four straight. Saint Joseph's has been playing in close games as of late, with a 60-58 win over Princeton followed by a buzzer-beating three-point shot to take down Temple last week. Saint Joseph's broke its streak of close games earlier this week when it trounced Coppin State on Tuesday night, 87-65.
Sophomore Deuce Jones II has been the difference maker for the Hawks, averaging a team-high 15.6 points per game. Jones II is the reigning Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year, earning the honor at La Salle, where he spent his freshman season. The Trenton, N.J. native got off to a slow start in his Hawks career, scoring just two points in the season opener against Lafayette. Since then, Jones II is averaging 17.3 points per game and has scored more than 20 points on three separate occasions. The sophomore also knocked down the game-winning three as time expired in the win versus Temple, giving the Hawks a 60-59 edge.
Justice Ajogbor, an Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team honoree a year ago, anchors the paint for the Hawks. Ajogbor has picked up multiple blocks in six games this season, and owns a season total of 16. He recorded his first double-double of the campaign against Temple, scoring 10 points to go with 11 boards, and added three blocks. He contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in the most recent win over Coppin State.
Sophomore Jaiden Glover-Toscano was a key player in the Hawks' win over Coppin State earlier this week, scoring a career-high 25 points on 8-of-16 (.500) shooting, including a 7-of-13 (.538) mark from beyond the arc. Glover-Toscano spent his freshman season with St. John's where he averaged 2.2 points per game. Since joining the Hawks, he has started in all nine games and is averaging 13.6 points per contest.
Saint Joseph's enters Thursday's tilt averaging 77.3 points per game and leading Division I in team free throw percentage (.813).
Saint Joseph's is led by Head Coach Steve Donahue, who is in his first season at the helm of the Hawks' program. Donahue is in his 25th season as a head coach at the Division I level, with a pair of stints in the Ivy League at Cornell and most recently with Penn. While with Cornell, he led the Big Red to the NCAA Tournament in each of his final three years with the program, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in his last season in 2009-10. Following his time at Cornell, he spent four seasons with Boston College. In total, Donahue has accumulated a 337-342 record.
Series History
The two teams have met eight times before with the series tied at four wins each. This marks the first encounter between the two programs since November 11th, 2007 when the Orange won, 72-69, on a Jonny Flynn three-pointer as time was expiring.
