HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Though Stony Brook won the tipoff, the Orange defense kept it tight, forcing a Seawolves turnover on a shot clock violation in the first possession of the game. Hawkins completed a 3-point play early in the game to help contribute to the Orange's 22-8 lead in the first quarter. 'Cuse kept the Seawolves scoreless for 5 minutes and 17 seconds of play as the Orange went on an 11-0 run.Â
Syracuse closed out the first half leading 37-21. The Orange picked up the momentum late in the second quarter as Laila Phelia and Hawkins added points to the board. The duo accounted for 15 points in the first half, along with five steals and a block by Phelia.Â
A behind-the-back pass by Sophie Burrows found Dominique Darius to finish the drive late in the third quarter to extend SU's lead. Darius continued to add to the score, shooting 3-for-6 in the third quarter and collected five rebounds and one block. The Orange entered the fourth quarter with a 15-point lead over the Seawolves.Â
A steal by Phelia turned into a fast-break layup by Hawkins in the final quarter to increase the momentum in the Dome. The Orange tallied 22 points in the final 10 minutes of play, as freshman Uche Izoje contributed eight points in her Syracuse debut.Â
