The Orange women's basketball team improved to 2-0 after taking down New York State foe UAlbany 64-45 in Friday night's contest at the Dome.Â
Double-digit efforts from Uche Izoje (13), Dominique Darius (12) and Angelica Velez (10) kept the Orange active against the Great Danes.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
The game started off at a slow, but steady pace as both teams had a scoreless defensive battle for the first two minutes of play. The Great Danes struck first, but the Orange took control to end the quarter with a 16-4 lead. Â
The Orange put pressure on UAlbany, forcing eight turnovers in the second quarter. Syracuse kept the Great Danes scoreless for 5 minutes and 6 seconds as they increased their lead to 27-10 to end the first half. This is the least amount of points the Orange have allowed in the first half since facing St. Francis (PA) on Dec. 21, 2023, when the Red Flashes only put up 15 points. Darius outscored UAlbany as she tallied 13 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field and going 4-5 in free throws.
Coming out of the locker room, Izoje took control, scoring five baskets in a row, to extend the Orange lead to 21 points. A steal by Darius led to a behind-the back pass to Journey Thompson, who completed a three-point play from the line. Velez and Thompson made impactful scoring efforts that would solidify the 52-18 score to end the third quarter.Â
Velez kept the energy up in the Dome as she continued her three-field goal streak into the final quarter. The guard put up another jumper to add onto the Orange's 36-point lead. The Great Danes picked up the pace, outshooting Syracuse in the final quarter, but the Orange were able to hold their lead, defeating UAlbany 64-45 and improving to 7-1 against the Great Danes.Â
Â
