Women's Basketball Defeats Daemen in Exhibition Game

Uche Izoje and Laila Phelia scored a combined 36 points in the Syracuse women's basketball team's 98-62 win over Daemen in an exhibition game on Tuesday Oct. 28. It marked the lone preseason contest for the Orange, who open the 2025-26 season at home against Stony Brook on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
How it Happened
In the first 11 seconds of game play, a foul on Daemen's Shyla Montgomery sent Junior Sophie Burrows to the line, putting two up on the board early for the Orange. Senior transfer Laila Phelia scored eight points in the first quarter to help Syracuse to a 33-21 lead at the first break.The Orange defense kept Daemen scoreless for the first 6:03 of play in the second quarter. Syracuse found themselves shooting 4-for-6 at the line after six Daemen fouls put the Orange in the bonus. 'Cuse entered the half leading 53-33.
Phelia started off the second half with a three pointer to increase the Orange's stride. Freshman Uche Izoje led the Orange in the third quarter, adding eight points of her own to Syracuse's 23-point frame.
The final frame was filled with Syracuse emptying the bench and seeing what many of the newcomers could do. Keira Scott had seven points in the just over three minutes of action during the fourth to cap off a 13-point performance on her birthday. Scott shot 5-fot-6 from the field and added four assists.
The Orange went on to win by 36, with all 14 available players seeing action in the preseason win.

- Eight new faces entered the court for the first time in an Orange jersey, including four freshman and four transfers.
- Syracuse scored 54 points in the paint while holding the Wildcats to 24.
- 'Cuse's 98 points were the most the team has scored in an exhibition game and the most scored since last season's win over Niagara where the Orange defeated the Purple Eagles 108-84 on Nov. 5, 2024.
