'Cuse Update
Syracuse played to a 1-1 draw against No. 20 Penn State Friday evening, extending its unbeaten streak to 17 games. This was the first match that ended in a tie for the Orange since Nov. 9, 2022, when the team drew 2-2 against No. 11 Virginia and advanced to the ACC Championship game on penalty kicks (5-3).
Â
The Nittany Lions got on the board at the 88:07 mark on Friday after the Orange had been playing with 10 players over the final 20 minutes of the match.
Â
After conceding the goal, 'Cuse marched down the pitch and delivered its own tally just six seconds later. Graduate student Pablo Pedregosa corralled fellow fifth year Felipe D'Agostini's shot that rang off the post, hitting the open left side of the net to tie the match.
Â
The Orange finished the match with a season-high 20 shot attempts and 11 corner kicks.
Â
Déjà Vu to 2022
Syracuse has now begun the year 2-0-1 for the second straight season, earning a 1-1 draw on the road in its third match.
Â
Last season, the Orange opened with 2-0 and 1-0 victories over Iona and No. 21 Penn State, respectively, before playing to a 1-1 draw at Vermont.
Â
Unlike its championship campaign, the 2023 squad has found the back of the net six times over the span, compared to four goals a year ago.
Â
Scouting the Great Danes
Trevor Gorman is in his 13th season at the helm of the UAlbany men's soccer program. The Great Danes have won their last two matches after starting the 2023 campaign off with a 2-1 loss at Boston University. UAlbany has since defeated Niagara and Villanova in a pair of 2-0 victories. Five different Great Danes have scored this season. Jeff Thielmann leads the squad with both a goal and an assist.
Â
Series History
Monday's contest will mark the 12th all-time meeting between Syracuse and UAlbany. The Orange are 7-2-2 in the series, with the two teams playing to a 1-1 draw in their last meeting on Feb. 19, 2021.
Â
Noah Singelmann scored the lone goal for 'Cuse in the match, scoring in the 12th minute of play.
