LeQuint Allen Jr. had a career day for the Syracuse University football team, which dropped a 17-10 decision at home against longtime rival Boston College Friday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.Â
Allen led the Orange offense, covering 142 yards on the ground, a new career best for the sophomore back. He did so on 18 carries for a 7.9 per-rush average on the night in the first Syracuse game at home since the month of September.
Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader was ruled out due to an injury suffered against Virginia Tech. Making his first start of the season, and the second in his Syracuse career, Carlos Del-Rio Wilson completed seven of his 17 pass attempts while also rushing for 67 yards and the Syracuse touchdown.
Syracuse (4-5, 0-5 ACC) was backed on defense by Anwar Sparrow and Justin Barron, who had three pass breakups between them, including two from the latter. Both picked up fumbles as well. Four Orange defenders, Kevon Darton, Marlowe Wax, Caleb Okechukwu, and Jason Simmons Jr., finished with seven total tackles. Wax and Stefon Thompson each logged two tackles for loss. Wax moved to a tie for seventh all-time at Syracuse in the category, upping his career total to 34.5 TFLs.
All told, the Orange offense covered 209 yards on the ground while the defense held the Eagles to just 165 passing yards.
After a Syracuse interception on the team's first offensive possession, the Orange defense bent but did not break, holding BC on goal-to-go on three straight downs, forcing a field goal for the game's first score 10 minutes in.Â
With two minutes left in the first, Allen took off on a 32 yard run to the BC 33 yard line. Two plays later, Del Rio-Wilson went for a 33-yard run and the first rushing touchdown of his 'Cuse career, putting up a 7-3 Orange lead with 33 seconds left in the first quarter.
Four minutes later, the Syracuse defense held BC to a three-and-out with the punter's heels near the back of the end zone. A short, pressured punt set the Orange up on the Eagles' 40-yard line.
A defensive pass interference in the end zone against the Orange setup the first Boston College touchdown with 48 seconds left in the first half and a 10-7 Eagles lead. Thomas Castellanos threw a screen pass for two yards to Anthony Ferrucci.
Syracuse held BC on 4th and inches with 64 seconds left in the third quarter. On the very next play, Allen snapped off a 56-yard rush inside the BC red zone, putting him over the 100-yard mark for the fourth time this season. That rush set up a 36-yard Brady Denaburg field goal, tying the game 10-10 with just over 14 minutes to play.
With 12:27 left in the fourth, Kyle Robichaux caught a pass and was immediately hit by Justin Barron, who recovered the loose ball and made it to the Boston College 41-yard line. On the ensuing possession, Del Rio-Wilson connected with Hatcher but the ball was ripped free by BC's Elijah Jones. The 'Cuse defense had the offense's back, limiting the Eagles to a three-and-out, but a BC fake punt for a first down put the Eagle offense back on the field.
Late in the fourth quarter, Boston College scored its second touchdown of the night on a quarterback scramble from Castellanos from seven yards out, ending an 11-play, 71-yard drive. The Eagles took a 17-10 lead with 2:23 left in the game.
On the next Orange drive, a tipped pass fell into the hands of a Boston College defender, giving the Eagles possession at the Syracuse 46 yard line. The Eagles ran down the remainder of the clock to finish the game.
The Orange head to Yankee Stadium next Saturday to face Pittsburgh for the 100th anniversary of the first college football game played on that site. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network. Tickets are available through cuse.com/tickets.
