ORANGE IN THE APPLE
• Syracuse and Pittsburgh are celebrating the centennial anniversary of the first football game played in Yankee Stadium. The 1923 meeting between the two teams laid the groundwork for a long history of football at Yankee Stadium.
• This is the Orange's 11th trip to Yankee Stadium to play college football. Syracuse is 7-3 in those games, including a 2-2 record at the new stadium, which opened in 2009.
• The Orange won four in a row at Yankee Stadium dating back to their 1963 triumph over Notre Dame at the old ballpark before losing to the Fighting Irish in their most recent regular season neutral-site game in the House that Ruth Built in 2018. The streak included a 36-34 win over Kansas St. in the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl.
• Historically, Syracuse has been successful when playing in pro venues in the greater New York/New Jersey area, boasting a 20-16-2 (.552) combined record in games played in Yankee Stadium (7-3), Shea Stadium (1-0), the Polo Grounds (7-6-2), Giants Stadium (5-3) and MetLife Stadium (0-4).
FAMILIAR FOE
• Syracuse will face one of its top-five most frequent opponents for the second-straight week.
• After facing Boston College for the 57th time last week, the Orange take on Pittsburgh for the 79th time, which is the most games against any opponent in program history.Â
• The first meeting between 'Cuse and Pitt took place in 1916 in Archbold Stadium.
SERIES HISTORY
• Saturday's game will be the 79th meeting between Syracuse and Pittsburgh.
• The Panthers lead the all-time series, 43-32-3.
• The series dates back to 1916, and the Orange notched their first win against Pitt in 1919. The Panthers recorded an 11-game winning streak from 1973-1983, to which Syracuse responded by going 16-1-1 from 1984-2001. The Orange's 78 matchups vs. Pittsburgh are their most against any opponent.
A WIN WOULD …Â
• Improve Dino Babers' record to 41-54 as head coach of the Orange.
• Give the Orange their first ACC win of the season.
• Give Syracuse its 753rd all-time victory (includes 11 wins from 2004-06 that were vacated by the NCAA). The Orange currently rank 21st on the FBS ledger of winningest programs. Syracuse is one of 33 FBS schools to have accumulated 700+ wins.
