SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 3 Syracuse caps the 2014 regular season Saturday, May 3 with a 4 p.m. game versus Colgate in the Carrier Dome. The Orange is 10-4 overall after spliting a pair of games against Duke and Notre Dame at last weekend's ACC Championship. The Raiders are 9-6 and have lost two of their last three, including a 12-6 defeat at the hands of No. 1 Loyola in the Patriot League semifinals.
SENIOR DAY AT THE DOME
Nine members of the Orange program will be honored prior to the Colgate game in a short ceremony as part of Senior Day. Chris Daddio, Matt Harris, Kyle Henry, Drew Jenkins, Dominic Lamolinara, Scott Loy, Derek Maltz, Pat Powderly and Billy Ward will all be introduced individually before faceoff. As a group, they have won three conference championships (one regular season, two tournament) and helped the Orange earn four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the 2013 national championship game.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Of the 67 Division I lacrosse teams, only ACC members Syracuse (7-0) and North Carolina (8-0) have not lost to a non-conference opponent. The Orange is looking to close the 2014 regular season unbeaten outside the league for the first time since joining a conference (BIG EAST) in 2010.
ORANGE IN THE RPI
Syracuse is No. 1 in the latest RPI released by the NCAA on Monday, April 28. The Orange has four top-10 RPI wins (Duke, Cornell, Notre Dame, North Carolina) and is 6-4 versus the RPI top 20.
STRONG SECOND HALF
Utilizing a new stance, faceoff specialist Chris Daddio has completely turned around his season. Daddio was 58-136 (.426) in SU's first seven games. In the last seven, Daddio is 104-189 (.550). In addition, Daddio has taken every faceoff for the Orange since a 21-7 loss to Duke on March 23 and the Orange is 6-1 during that stretch.
Daddio has posted at least 15 faceoff victories in four of the seven contests and has been better than 50 percent in five of the seven.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate is one of the top defensive teams in the nation, but has had trouble matching that production on offense. The Raiders are averaging just 8.6 goals per contest (55th nationally), while allowing 8.2 (9th nationally).
Ryan Walsh (30 goals, 13 assists) and Brendon McCann (22 goals, 13 assists) are the team's primary offensive threats. Walsh was recently named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team after combining for four goals and two assists versus Bucknell and Loyola.
Patriot League Rookie of the Year Brandon Burke anchors the defense. The freshman goalie is seventh in the country in goals-against average (8.12). He has 145 saves and has started all 15 contests.
Faceoff man Alex Kinnealey is one of the best in the business. Kinnealey ranks eighth in the NCAA in faceoff winning percentage (.628, 179-285). He's also picked up 107 ground balls.
Head coach Mike Murphy is in his third season with the Raiders. Murphy spent seven years at Army prior to being appointed to the top post at Colgate. Murphy is 31-17 overall and guided the Raiders to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2012.
THE COLGATE SERIES
Syracuse owns a 43-11-1 lead in the all-time series against the Raiders and won 17 of the 18 contests between the two teams from 1967 to 2006.
Colgate has won two of the last three meetings, beating the Orange in 2007 (12-5) and 2008 (2008). SU won the most recent matchup, 13-7, in 2009 behind one goal and four assists from Kenny Nims.
In the 1977 pairing, Syracuse set school records for goals scored (30) and margin of victory (28) in a 30-2 home win.
