Junior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) dodged and rolled his way to the game-winning goal with 1:19 left in overtime, as top-ranked Syracuse survived a 14-13 decision against Brown at Stevenson Field. The goal was Springer's third of the afternoon and moved him into 16th place on SU's all-time goals ledger (105).
For Brown (2-4), the game was its third one-goal loss of the season. The Bears gave Syracuse all it could handle, including a 13-12 deficit with 4:24 left in regulation thanks to a Mike Albarelli goal, his second of the day. Brown clung to its one-goal lead and had possession of the ball with just more than a minute remaining, but SU Player of the Year candidate John Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md./Boys' Latin) stripped Ryan Culligan behind the cage and left a groundball available for one of his teammates to scoop up and head to the other end with.
Senior midfielder Spencer Wright (San Diego, Calif./Junipero Serra) took a shot to tie the game, but it sailed wide. The Orangemen retrieved the groundball and looked for another opening as time was winding down. Classmate Brian Solliday (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) then found sophomore midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) for the game-tying goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation. It was Lindsay's only goal of the game. His first three shots were either high or wide.
In overtime, Syracuse won the faceoff to take possession first. Freshman midfielder Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Tully) grabbed the groundball and made a bee-line for the cage. He got tangled up by a Brown defenseman, but still managed to get a shot off from the ground. The Orangemen recovered the loose ball and Wright was next to get a scoring opportunity, but his shot was wide.
The Bears had one chance to win the game in overtime. Chas Gessner's 15-yard shot from the right wing skimmed the front of the SU cage and missed by about a foot.
Syracuse trailed for the first time this season at halftime (7-6). The Orangemen opened the game with a 2-0 lead behind goals from Springer and senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage). Gessner was the first to get Brown on the scoreboard at the 9:47 mark. Springer tallied his second goal to put SU ahead, 3-1, but Albarelli and Jonathan Thompson registered goals to close out the first quarter and the game was tied 3-3 after one.
All three times Syracuse scored in the second quarter, Brown answered. Jimmy Mormile had two goals and an assist for Brown, including the goal that tied the game at 6-6 with 4:44 remaining in the first half. Gessner put the Bears up 7-6 with 58.3 seconds remaining before intermission.
Brown extended its lead to 8-6 when Mormile converted an extra-man opportunity at 12:57 of the third quarter. Park scored his second goal of the game and fifth in SU's last three contests, just 1:20 later to keep the Orangemen within one (8-7). Syracuse then notched its first man-up goal at the 9:09 mark when Coffman found sophomore attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) who tied the game at 8-8.
Sophomore attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage), who finished with three goals and an assist, recorded his second goal at the 8:59 mark of the third quarter. Mormile responded again for Brown and tied the contest at 9-9 with 5:31 remaining in the third stanza.
Solliday, who it was planned would only play on man-up situations because he is still nursing sore ribs, saw more action as the game wore on. He scored two goals in the final five minutes of the third quarter. His first goal gave SU a 10-9 lead and his second, a man-up tally, gave the Orangemen an 11-10 advantage heading into the fourth period.
Culligan tied the contest at 11-11 early in the fourth quarter. Powell and Coffman connected on an extra-man play a little more than two minutes later which gave SU a 12-11 edge, but Gessner and Mormile made the most of Brown's third extra-man opportunity of the game and buried a shot to tie the contest for the ninth time with 5:46 left in regulation.
SU face-off specialist Chris Bickel (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) won 21-of-30 faceoffs, including the final six of the contest.
Goalie Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) finished with six saves, while Brown's Mike Levin was spectacular with 18 stops.
The Orangemen's next game is Saturday, April 6 against fourth-ranked Loyola at the Carrier Dome at 4 p.m.
