Senior attackman Josh Coffman (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) scored a game-high six points on three goals and three assists, including a goal and two assists in the first quarter, which helped the top-ranked Syracuse Orangemen to a 15-6 men's lacrosse victory against No. 3-ranked Loyola at the Carrier Dome. It marked the first loss of the season for the Greyhounds, while the Orangemen won their fourth game in a row.
Loyola is 7-1 on the season, while Syracuse is 8-1.
Coffman surpassed Roy Colsey (1992-95) on Syracuse's all-time scoring list with his performance against Loyola. He is now 17th on the list with 164 career points (99 goals, 65 assists). Colsey finished with 163 points during his four seasons at SU.
Syracuse never trailed in the game. In fact, the Orangemen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and led 5-1 at the end of the opening 15 minutes. Parker Adams put Loyola on the board with 1:16 remaining in the first stanza.
The closest the Greyhounds came was within two goals (5-3) after Stephen Brundage and Michael Sullivan tallied a pair of unassisted goals to begin the second period. By halftime, Syracuse led 10-5 thanks to two goals by sophomore attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) and two goals and an assist by Coffman. Nee, who registered his third hat trick of the season, recorded an extra-man tally off an assist from sophomore attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) with 1:32 left in the second quarter. That gave the Orangemen a 10-4 lead. LC's Ryan Radonis scored 15 seconds later for the final goal of the half.
The Orangemen held Loyola scoreless in the third quarter and in the meantime added on two more goals to take a commanding 12-5 lead with one quarter remaining. Nee cashed in on his second extra-man opportunity, finishing a feed from senior midfielder Brian Solliday (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage). Senior midfielder Spencer Wright (San Diego, Calif./Junipero Serra), who also finished with three goals on the evening, registered his second off an assist from Powell with 1:03 remaining in the third period.
Freshman midfielder Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) gave SU a 13-5 lead just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. It was his sixth goal in SU's last four games. Adams was responsible for the Greyhound's final goal of the game at the 11:21 mark of the fourth quarter. The Orangemen tacked on two more scores, one by Wright and one by senior midfielder Tom Hardy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) with 4:16 remaining in the contest.
Red-shirt freshman Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) and sophomore Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) combined for 12 Syracuse saves. Loyola played Mark Bloomquist and Mike Fretwell in goal. Bloomquist played the majority of the minutes and finished with nine of LC's 10 saves.
The Orangemen travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for a 5 p.m. contest against No. 10-ranked Cornell on Tuesday, April 9, at Schoellkopf Field.
