
SU Loses at Top-Ranked Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The No. 14/13 Syracuse Orangemen lost to No. 1/2 Miami, 59-0, in front of 52,896 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL.
The loss ended the Orangemen's eight-game winning streak. All of the Orange's losses in 2001 have come to teams ranked in the top-10. All of SU losses since October 21, 2000, when SU was defeated by Virginia Tech, have come against teams ranked in the top-10. Syracuse is now 8-3 and 5-1 in the BIG EAST, while Miami is 9-0 and 6-0 in the BIG EAST.
Senior tailback James Mungro led SU in rushing. He had 49 yards on 17 carries. Mungro needs 14 more yards to become just the seventh running back in Syracuse history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.
On Syracuse's first series punter Mike Shafer caught a snap that had bounced in front of him before quickly getting off the kick. Shafer punted 10 times against Miami, placing three inside the 20. Shafer had a game-long 56-yard boot to go with his 40.8 game average. In the game he set the SU single-season punting yardage record. He now has 3,135 punting yards this season.
The SU defense held Miami to a field goal on the Hurricanes' first drive. Todd Sievers made a 48-yard field goal to put Miami up 3-0.
Will Hunter highlighted the Orange's defensive play. The senior cornerback forced a fumble, had a quarterback sack and posted a team-leading five tackles.
Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey threw three touchdown passes in the first half to give the Hurricanes a 24-0 halftime lead. Miami added 21 points in the third quarter. Miami would add 14 points in the final quarter to account for the final score, 59-0.
Quarterback R.J Anderson completed 9-of-18 passes for 66 yards and an interception. The interception is just the second turnover committed by Anderson this season.
Nine different runners carried the ball for the Orangemen. Barry Baker had a career-high five rushes to go with a career-high 29 yards and a personal best 13-yard rush.
