
Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore John Galloway (Syracuse, N.Y.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 9, 2009.
Galloway returns for his sophomore season with the Orange men's lacrosse team after having helped guide Syracuse to its record 10th NCAA National Championship in 2008. He opened the 2009 season with eight saves in 41:55 minutes of action on Saturday, February 7. The Orange defeated Harvard, 10-7, in a scrimmage at the Carrier Dome.
A broadcast journalism major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Galloway started all 18 games last season. He won a school-record 16 games on his way to becoming the fifth true freshman goaltender in NCAA history to lead a team to the national championship.
Galloway and the rest of the 2009 Orange men's lacrosse team open the regular season on Sunday, February 15 against Providence. The matchup begins at 2 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Senior Jamie Kelling (Davenport, Iowa) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 9, 2009.
Kelling, in her second season with the Orange softball team, helped Syracuse open the 2009 season this past weekend at the University of New Mexico. Syracuse was 2-1 in the three-game series. Kelling made 12 plate appearances and tallied three runs, three hits and one RBI on the weekend. On defense she registered two putouts and four assists versus the Lobos.
Last season, Kelling was second on the team with a .320 batting average. She started in all 53 games and had a team-leading 181 at-bats. She earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors after helping the Orange to a 12-10 conference record and its fifth overall postseason appearance.
Kelling, a marketing and management major, and the rest of the Syracuse softball team heads back on the road this coming weekend to the College of Charleston Classic. After meeting CofC on Friday, February 13, the Orange will take on Akron, James Madison, Howard and East Tennessee before the weekend is over.
