Michael Powell was one of the best players to wear an Orange uniform. He holds the record for the most career points (307) and is the only player to win the Jack Turnbull Award four times. He is also the only Syracuse player to win the W.H. Brine Award twice. Powell was a four-time All-American and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team three times. He played for the US in the World Games in 2002 and 2006.
He also ranks on many of Syracuse’s record lists. In NCAA Tournaments, Powell has the most career assists (34 in 13 games), the second-most single tournament assists (11 in 2004), the second-most career points (58) and the third-most single tournament points (19 in 2004). He ranks sixth on SU’s career goal list (150) and fourth on the career assists list (157). He scored 70 goals in his first year, ranking him second among SU first-year players.
Powell graces SU’s single season goal list twice with 47 in 2004 (9th) and 42 in 2002 (21st). He made the single season assist list in 2004 with 42 (9th), 2003 with 33 (26th) and 2002 with 42. Lastly, Powell ranked on SU’s single season point list three times in his four years; he is tied for fourth (89 in 2004), ranked ninth (84 in 2002) and tied for 23rd (70 in 2001).
2004: STX/USILA First-Team All-American…recipient of Jack Turnbull Award (Attackman of the Year)…won the Tewaaraton Trophy winner (Best Player in College Lacrosse)… won Lt. Raymond Enners Award (Player of the Year)…played for the North in the North/South Collegiate All-Star game…scored three goals and had two assists in the quarterfinal game against Georgetown in a Syracuse 8-7 win…tallied a game-high six points with one goal and five assists against Navy in Syracuse’s 14-13 National Championship win…recipient of the W.H. Brine Award (Most Outstanding Player Division I Championship Game)…selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team…started and played in all 17 games…lead the game with 47 goals, 42 assists and 89 points…recovered 57 groundballs.
2003: STX/USILA First-Team All-American...recipient of the Jack Turnbull Award (Attackman of the Year) for the third consecutive campaign...finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy...led the team in scoring for the third-straight season with 64 points (31 goals, 33 assists)...fourth in the nation in points per game (4.00 ppg) and eighth in assists per game (2.06 apg).
2002: STX/USILA First-Team All-American...winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy and the Jack Turnbull Award...led the nation in scoring with 4.94 points per game...voted the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament...selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team...scored a game-high seven points (four goals, three assists) in the national championship game against Princeton...was the second-leading scorer on the United States World Championship team in Australia with 27 points (seven goals and a team-leading 20 assists).
2001: STX/USILA First-Team All-American...recipient of the Jack Turnbull Award...selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team...the team’s leader in points (70) and assists (40), the second-highest totals ever recorded by a freshman at SU...became the first freshman since his brother, Casey (1995), to lead Syracuse in scoring...became the first freshman in school history to earn first-team All-America honors...averaged 4.38 points per game which tied for fifth in the nation...registered two goals and two assists, including the game-tying goal with 16 seconds remaining in the national championship contest against Princeton which forced overtime.
