Pat March, who has engineered offenses that have ranked in the top-10 nationally in scoring in four of the last-five seasons at both Princeton and Syracuse, serves as the Orange’s offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator.
Ready for his fifth season in 2024, March was elevated to the associate head coach postion in October 2023 for the Syracuse University lacrosse program, retaining offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator duties as well.
While his first year at SU was shortened, March’s offense provided a glimpse at what his units could accomplish. ‘Cuse finished the shortened 2020 season ranked sixth nationally in scoring offense (16.60 goals per game), fifth in scoring margin (+7.2 goals per game), 10th in points per game (25.20) and the Syracuse first-midfield unit was on pace to be the third-highest scoring trio in program history, behind just the 1988 and 1990 squads that featured the Gait brothers.
Individually, Stephen Rehfuss was on pace for a historic season, averaging 3.6 assists per game, Chase Scanlan was third in the ACC at 3.6 goals per game and Jamie Trimboli led the nation in scoring by a midfielder at 3.4 goals per game. ‘Cuse was also tenacious on the ride, with Griffin Cook leading all attackmen nationally with seven caused turnovers.
His second season saw 'Cuse post the 13th-best scoring offense nationally, while Owen Hiltz put up a historic freshman season, leaving Orange fans excited about the future. Hiltz had the eighth-most productive season in cumulative points, goals and assists in Syracuse history, despite the Orange playing just 13 games with the COVID-impacted 2021 schedule, en route to an All-America season.
March came to Syracuse having spent the three seasons prior as the Princeton offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, with previous coaching stops at Vermont, Dickinson College, his alma mater, Roanoke, and professionally with the Atlanta Blaze.
In addition to March’s offensive expertise, he’s brought in top-level talent to the Orange. His first recruiting class featured the signing of talented attackman Owen Hiltz, who was the third-ranked player in the class of 2020 by Inside Lacrosse. It was Syracuse’s top-rated recruit since the 2013 signing class.
March had the same recruiting success with the Tigers. After being unranked in Inside Lacrosse’s recruiting rankings 2017 and not in the top-15 since 2014, March brought Princeton back-to-back top-12 classes in the last two recruiting cycles.
In March’s first season running the offense at Princeton, the Tigers made a 50-percent jump in scoring offense, scoring nearly 15 goals per game. The 2017 squad ranked second nationally in the category and did it efficiently as well, posting the top shooting percentage in the nation. The offense continued to be a national leader in subsequent years, ranking third and 10th nationally in the past two seasons.
March mentored a pair of Major League Lacrosse draft picks in Zach Currier and Austin Sims. Currier was selected in the first round of the MLL Draft of 2017. He’s also helped Tigers’ attackman Michael Sowers set the program’s single-season points record in 2019 with 90 (37G, 53A).
Prior to his stint in New Jersey, March was on the Vermont staff which saw the Catamounts reach the America East Championship Game for the first time in program history. While there, March coached Ian MacKay, the America East Offensive Player of the Year.
March spent two seasons coaching at Division III Dickinson College, during which time the team rose to as high as No. 2 nationally and won two conference titles and made two NCAA tournament appearances. He coached four first-team All-Americas and 12 All-Americas total, as well as 15 all-league selections. The team set school records for goals, assists and points.
March began his coaching career at Roanoke in 2011, when the Maroons reached the NCAA semifinals.
March also has experience in Major League Lacrosse, serving as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Blaze under former Orange standout Liam Banks. The Blaze led the MLL in every major offensive category in 2019, buoyed by Orange alums Tommy Palasek and Randy Staats.
A two-time All-America attackman at Roanoke, March was a 200-point scorer, notching 243 points on 152 goals and 91 assists.
