
#4 Syracuse Falls to #1 Cornell on Long Island

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Fourth-ranked Syracuse University men's lacrosse dropped a 17-12 decision at Mitchel Field on Saturday afternoon against top-ranked Cornell at an event hosted by Corrigan Sports Enterprises.
The Orange (9-3) were led by a six-point performance from Owen Hiltz, who finished with four goals and two assists. Michael Leo and Luke Rhoa added another four points each, the former with two goals and two assists while the latter posted three goals and a helper. John Mullen won 16 of his 29 faceoffs while snapping up 11 ground balls. Joey Spallina chipped in a goal to hit the 100 career goal milestone.
Cornell (10-1) got eight points apiece from CJ Kirst (5g, 3a) while Ryan Goldstein had three goals and five assists. The Big Red had 10 different players register a point. Wyatt Knust made 14 saves.
How it Happened
- Cornell took a 2-0 lead after Kirst and Brendan Staub scored in succession. Syracuse tied the game within the next two minutes on buries from Rhoa and Hiltz, assisted by Payton Anderson and Wyatt Hottle, respectively.
- From the midway point of the first quarter to the midway point of the second, Cornell went on a 6-0 run as Kirst scored twice, bookending four other goal getters for the Big Red.
- Hiltz scored back-to-back goals to end the drought, cutting the Cornell lead to 8-4.
- Kirst scored the final goal of the half to make it a 9-5 contest after 30 minutes.
- Syracuse pulled back within two for the first time quickly in the third quarter on goals from Leo and Rhoa, one assisted by Sam English and the second from Hiltz.
- The Big Red scored another four unanswered goals to take a 13-7 lead midway into the third period. Syracuse responded with a four goal run of its own with four different scorers: English, Tyler Cordes, Leo, and Hiltz in succession.
- Cornell scored four of the game's final five goals broken up by a Rhoa goal with 10 minutes to play.
- With the regular season nonconference schedule completed, the Orange return to ACC play next weekend.
- No. 4 Syracuse heads for Durham, North Carolina for a showdown at No. 12 Duke.
- Game time at Koskinen Stadium is slated for 2 p.m. on ACC Network.
- The Orange wrap up the regular season the following week, returning to the JMA Wireless Dome on April 26 to host North Carolina at 5 p.m. on ACC Network.
