The 2014 Orange defense held nine of its 12 opponents to less than its season average for total offense and was one of four FBS teams to surrender fewer than 10 rushing touchdowns (9). Alabama (5), TCU (9) and Ole Miss (9) were the others. |
In 2014, the SU defense was responsible for four touchdowns (2 INT returns, 2 fumble returns), including two in the team’s win at Wake Forest. |
SU was the only FBS team in the nation not to allow a 100-yard rusher in 2013. |
In 2013, the Syracuse defense finished ranked nationally in multiple categories, including third-down defense (15th), rush defense (24th), sacks (18th), and tackles for loss (18th). |
From 2010-12, developed All-MAC performer Travis Carrie who finished sixth in the Mid-American Conference in forced fumbles. |
In 2008, Buffalo ranked first in forced fumbles and 43rd nationally in total defense, the program’s best ranking since 1999. |
At Buffalo, mentored 2008 and 2009 All-MAC performers Davonte Shannon and Mike Newton. |
In 2007, coached Detroit Lions defensive back Kenoy Kennedy who finished in the top 10 in tackles among NFC defensive backs. |
In 2006, mentored Detroit Lions rookies Gerald Alexander, who finished third on the NFL list for tackles by a rookie, and Daniel Bullocks who led all NFC rookies in tackles. |
In 2005, coached All-American cornerback Dion Byrum, who was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the best defensive back in college football. |
In 2004, Nebraska-Omaha ranked second in the North Central Conference (NCC) in total defense, scoring defense and led the league in turnovers gained. |
In 2003, the Nebraska-Omaha defense ranked fifth nationally with 31 turnovers gained and second in the NCC in pass efficiency defense. |
