Alex Smith joined the Orange football staff for the 2012 season after coaching the offensive line SUNY Brockport in the Spring of 2012.
The Niagara Falls, N.Y., native began his coaching career at his alma mater, SUNY Cortland as a volunteer assistant quarterbacks coach in 2008 and was named a full-time assistant in 2009. However, after an injury to Cortland’s starting quarterback early in the 2009 season, Smith appealed to the NCAA to restore his final season of eligibility and played the final seven games of the season. He threw for 1,041 yards and 13 touchdowns.
In 2010, Smith resumed his role as an assistant coach, mentoring the wide receivers and serving as the pass game coordinator and video coordinator for the offense until 2012. In 2011, he coached sopohmore receiver John Babin, who was named a D3Football.com All-American after setting Cortland single-season records with 72 catches, 1,183 yards, and 16 touchdowns.
At Cortland, Smith entered his name on the career record lists, closing his tenure tied for first on the touchdown passes record list (48), second on the completions chart (448) and third on the passing yards record list (5,461). As a freshman, Smith was an honorable mention All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection and tied a school single-game record with five touchdown passes in a win over Kean. As a sophomore in 2005, he passed for 230 yards and rushed for 100 yards in Cortland’s NCAA playoff opener at Hobart.
Smith earned a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland in criminology in 2008. He is a 2004 graduate of Niagara-Wheatfield High School. Smith and his wife Tami reside in Syracuse, N.Y.
