Sports Wagering
1. Office pools;
2. Neighborhood or other community based tournaments;
3. Pools/brackets involving the exchange of any money or items of value.
As a reminder, the following individuals shall not knowingly participate in sports wagering activities or provide information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition:
1. Staff members of the Syracuse University athletics department;
2. Nonathletics department staff members who have responsibilities within or over the athletics department (e.g., chancellor or president, faculty athletics representative, individual to whom athletics reports);
3. Staff members of a conference office; and
4. Student-athletes.
The prohibition against sports wagering applies to any Syracuse University practice or any competition (intercollegiate, amateur or professional) in a sport in which the NCAA conducts championship competition, in bowl subdivision football, and in emerging sports for women.
If a student-athlete is found to violate the sports wagering bylaws, he or she will be subject to the following violations:
1. A student-athlete who engages in activities designed to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate contest or in an effort to affect win-loss margins (“point shaving”) or who participates in any sports wagering activity involving Syracuse University shall permanently lose all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports.
2. A student-athlete who participates in any sports wagering activity through the Internet, a bookmaker or a parlay card shall be ineligible for all regular-season and postseason competition for a minimum period of one year from the date of Syracuse Universi- ty’s determination that a violation occurred and shall be charged with the loss of a minimum of one season of eligibility.
3. If the student-athlete is determined to have been involved in a later violation of any portion of Sports Wagering Bylaws, the student-athlete shall permanently lose all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports.
Note: Prohibited sports wagers include, but is not limited to; placing wagers with a student bookie, wagering with an internet gam- bling site, wagering with a legal sports book, participation in NCAA/ACC tournament pools, paying an entry fee and the possibility of winning a money/prize in a fantasy sports league, or placing wagers with friends and/or teammates.
